Absolutely, after a certain distance. If I don't, I get the World's Worst Headaches. My drink of choice is SkratchLabs mix, though Nuun, Gatorade, and Powerade work too.
not always. it depends on the length of the run and how hot/humid it is.
generally if I'm out for less than an hour I'll just have some water. unless it is crazy humid. then I'll have some nuun in my water.
more than an hour in the summer and I'll have nuun/gatorade during the run. more than 90 minutes in summer I'll have some margarita shot blocks + nuun/gatorade during and after.
Pretty much thus minus the shot blocks. But those sound good so I think I might need to try them out.
I use gels on long runs. Now that it's summer and I'm sweating an obscene amount, I need to get better about replacing electrolytes. I've already had a few running hangovers.
Hm. I wonder if this is what is causing my migrane today. I didn't run very far this morning, but it was already in the mid 70's and 85% humidity.
I've had a few crummy, headachey days lately. I started realizing it was the day after really hot, sweaty, evening runs. I was also drinking a ton of water, but I think it was too much of a good thing. I was replenishing my fluids adequately, but not my electrolytes.
In the winter I mostly stick with water unless it's a long run, and then I drink some Gatorade after. In this heat, I drink water with nuun after all my shorter runs and I take watered down Gatorade with me for the longer ones, plus whatever I'm fueling with.
Your body wants to have the right balance of salt and water at all times.
So, if you sweat - and lose water and salt - but only replace your water, then you have too much water and not enough salt. In return, you will not retain that water to be properly hydrated.
This is why after a salty meal, people get bloated. More salt results in the body holding onto water. If you want to get rid of the bloat, you need to drink more water. It's the same concept when you lose salt, you need to replace it or otherwise you won't feel hydrated.
It hasn't been an issue this summer because I'm not running right now (sad face), but in previous summers I would start adding gatorade to my water during any run over an hour for electrolyte replacement-I can't drink it solely in place of water during a run without making a bathroom trip less than 20 mins after, but doing a combo of half water half gatorade works well. I run with a large group on Saturdays that has water and gatorade out along our route so access to both has never been an issue.
I've found I can ONLY do gatorade though-Gu Brew? Nope. Powerade, even? No way-the last time I drank Powerade during a run I spent half that day puking...though that could have been due to the fact that I got hammered drunk the night before and only got up to run because I woke up hung over as shit and couldn't sleep so I figured might as well run. Bad idea.
I'm a salty sweater so I get ill (headache, nausea) if I don't replenish electrolytes. I like the margarita shot blox and water combo for long runs. Nuun, coconut water, g2, etc also help for after runs.

LOL! I'm going to go out on a limb here & guess that the bolded was the likely culprit.

What's going on in your avatar? Were you high jumping? Pole vaulting? What's in your left hand? Stop being so adorable all of the time in situations the rest of us would look ridiculous in!!

Yeah...well that, and the jager shots I'd been doing the night before. I didn't think it was possible to actually sweat alcohol. I was wrong.

I have started carrying a gatorade/water mix on long runs and drinking gatorade after when it's hot. For shorter runs, I just go by how I feel. If it was particularly hot/humid and I can feel the salt crust on my skin, I drink gatorade/powerade/etc. I also use gels on runs longer than 10 miles.
I've noticed several PPs say they are "salty sweaters". How do you figure this out? Thanks
Once my clothes dry out after a longish run, they are covered in white streaks. And after about 20 minutes in AC, my face and body are the same way. You can actually feel the salt crystals.

I am one salty, sexy beast after a run.
That's not a good thing. You need more sodium during your exercise.

I'm the same way. I run my face under the fountains at our water stops, and it's like I just jumped in the ocean. The water that runs down from my face is so salty! Once the rest of my body dries, it definitely has a light, salt layer.
