Today we received drawings with very detailed dimensions and our kitchen island is 7'6"w by 5'3"d. There is a seating/eating area on one side along the width but it still seems overly large to me. No sink. Thoughts/experiences? I'm thinking it won't break my heart to make it about 4'6"d.
I would think that all that matters is that you can reach the center from both sides, which I could easily do with the 5'3". Of course, I am 5'6" with abnormally long arms, so if you are short it could be a more difficult reach.
I can't even imagine having a kitchen big enough to handle an island that size. I am so jealous! Seriously...I was supposed to get my dream kitchen out of this move and wound up with a worse kitchen than my last one. lol
The size of the island needs to be proportionate to the space. As long as there's adequate room to move around it, you should be fine. I think 3-4 feet around (from the counters on the perimeter) is what's recommended.
