Hiii brainie! (I don't post a ton on GBCN, but this is mrs e 07 from IN)
I wear workout underwear whenever I work out. They are not cotton, so they don't get wet, they wick the sweat away. Some people go commando, but I wear workout undies. Nothing on your body while working out should be cotton (including socks). GL at your 5k!!
Yes, they do make special workout underpants (they had some on clearance at my Target recently if you have one never you it might be worth looking). A lot of ladies here advocate going commando, I haven't been able to bring myself to try it yet though.
If I wear shorts that have a liner, I go without underwear. Too lumpy and constricting. However, I prefer to wear something underneath if I'm working out in pants or capris. I have a few non-cotton pairs, but don't have a problem wearing my usual cotton ones for as infrequently as I do it.
1. Go commando. Problem solved. I'm a cyclist, and cycling shorts are meant to be worn commando. 2. Buy wicking underwear. Most fitness sites sell them. I have some from REI and Athleta that I wear on occasion. They help wick sweat. 3. Cotton is evil. Avoid it.
Running shorts with built in liners will change your life. If you MUST wear underwear, for the love of god, stay away from cotton! In the summer, I really don't think you can avoid being soaked. I just looked like I had jumped in a pool at the end of my run. I'd even be worried about chaffing in non cotton underwear. Let your undercarriage breathe!

I have a couple pairs from Target and Under Armour that are wicking material - they are still soaked in sweat like the rest of my workout clothes, but it doesn't feel as gross as regular underwear. I usually only wear them with certain pants or on long runs. Other times I just go commando
Ditch the undies! If you don't already have them get the shorts with liners or just the spandex tights/shorts/skorts. Makes a world of difference! Plus, you feel badass and faster because you're taking it to the next level!
I guess I'm maybe the lone person who doesn't go commando? I did it...and depending on the shorts I'm wearing, the chafing was just really bad. So now I wear seamless undies from target. Works fine, but yes, they get wet.
In summer, I'm pretty drenched head to toe after a run. It is what it is. This is also why I won't wear anything but black on the bottom - otherwise I look like I wet myself.
Whatever you do, don't wear a thong. Oh...the chafing.
