I've been running for several months now, but recently more often then usual. I've been getting terrible shin splints that I've never had to deal with before. I have new-ish shoes and only run outside.
Does anyone have any advice on how to either get rid of them, make them not hurt quite as much?
I'm sure you guys get annoying newbie questions all the time, but I appreciate any advice or help.
I actually had a discussion about shin splints with a few LRS people yesterday. This is what we came up with...
1. Cut back on the running until this bout of shin splints are healed. 2. Ice your shins 3. Stretch and stick/wine bottle/roll your shins 4. Write numbers/letters with your toes to stretch/strength your shins 5. Cut back on recently increased distance/speed 6. New shoes
If you haven't dramatically increased your distance/speed - per run or weekly - I would look into your new shoes. They may not be a good fit. I had terrible issues with my feet and shin running XC in HS and thought it was just running. Turns out it was 100% my shoes.
