I have always used G2/gatorade for my hydration on my runs, but was thinking of trying out coconut water. Do any of you train with coconut water? I went to the store and looked at 4 different brands of coconut water-and they all have different levels of potassium, sodium and sugars-so I am not sure which brand to even get. I live in Houston-and it hot and humid; so I've been gushing down water and g2 on my long runs these last few weeks, and its only the beginning. I was looking for some alternatives-but wasn't sure coconut water should be used during the runs, or as a post workout recovery drink?
I personally don't care for the taste, but at my former Crossfit box the trainers encouraged us to drink it post-workout. I believe they would bring in Vita Coco? I can't remember.
When I drink it, I drink it post workout. The brand is C2O but have sometimes used vita coco. Anything without added sugar is fine. A lot of people don't like the taste, but I love it.
You can buy a single packet of it at Whole Foods (at least around here you can). I like this powder because it's half the price of the liquid, and you can adjust the flavor/concentration per your taste.
That said...coconut water is not delicious. I like to keep hydrated so I drink it, but I'd rather be drinking almost anything else!
I use Skratch mix for my electrolytes. Coconut water is ok to me in small doses, but it has to be ice cold, and I prefer the fruit-added flavors. I can't stomach it once it's been worn on my back for an hour or more.
I like ice cold coconut water only. I like zico the best. The chocolate is really good on its own or blended into protein powder. Beware about drinking too much before a long run - I find it acts as a bit of a laxative on my system =(
I like some and I dislike other brands. My husband hates it. Anyway, I'm not sure it's THAT much better than regular water, but I mostly hydrate with regular water anyway.
