Awesome. I am on my way there right now and we need to go to Queens upon arrival. I am thinking uber will be better than the subway on a hot hot day. Plus I got a $20 credit.
Yes. It is quick, but more expensive than a cab so I don't really use it. Also, during high-volume times, it doesn't always have cars available.
Hailo is another one to try -- it hails yellow cabs, not black cabs. (Disclaimer: I am Hailo-loyal because friends work for it. But also, it is cheaper than Uber).
I will probably be using Uber tonight because my sister-in-law and her boyfriend are in town and they refuse to take yellow cabs beecause they're not up to snuff for them ^o)
Yeah I thought it would be cheaper than a cab with my credit plus my bFF who we are visiting says that sometimes the yellow cabs refuse to go to queens ( even though they are not supposed to which I know).
But I trust what V says about nYC. Is it busy in the city today? The train is empty.

With the credit it may be cheaper since you're going to an outer borough. Metered rates can be high for those distances.
I went to Soho today and was kind of surprised to discover that it was MUCH quieter than it usually is on Saturdays and Sundays. It seems like a ton of people who live here have fled, and at least downtown it isn't as full of tourists as I would have guessed! So you may be good. The heat doesn't help though.

I've used Uber in both DC and NYC. Definitely not cheap, but I have always thought it to be worth the money when I have used it -- e.g. on a day when it was pouring rain and no one could get a cab while standing in the rain trying to hail one, I got to wait nice and dry in the lobby of my building until the Uber car showed up 7 minutes later. It is also pretty common for them to run promo codes for new people -- I think I saw one for $20 just the other day.
I wish we had UberX in DC. I used it a few weeks ago in NYC after trying unsuccessfully to hail a yellow cab. The car was a nice, new, clean hybrid, and it was less expensive than the black cars.
Thanks guys. I got a $20 promo and then referred h, giving him a $20 credit. If he uses it then I get another $20 giving me $40. So we might try Uberx. I will keep you posted! My only other concern is we arrive at 4:45 and I know that's a shirty time to be on the road.

Maybe do try the subway then? Beyond traffic, that is cab witching hour (a lot are off-duty then).
As a follow up - we arrived at Penn Station and there was a very long line at the cab stand. We requested an uberX car from the app. Car came in under 5 minutes and we got to queens in about 20 minutes. The total came to $29 but we had the $20 credit so it was net $9. Plus I now have a $40 credit on my account to use to on Sunday when we leave.
I've found Über useful when our group would require 2 cabs it turns out to be cheaper to requests SUV than 2 cabs. Also when the taxi line at a hotel is ridiculously long Über works out much better. I have used them n NY, Boston, San Fran, and Seattle.
