Later this week I am going on a quick trip with my sister to Chicago. We normally don't travel together because we have pretty different interests. I like outdoor activities, night life, sightseeing, anything involving water. She is kind of limited in how much walking she can do because of her physical condition. We both do enjoy eating out, although I am on kind of a clean eating kick. We are staying in Millenium Park area and won't have a car. So far I have gotten us tickets to see a Cubs game. Not sure what else we should do. Any other suggestions for activities or restaurants to try? Thanks!
Would your sister be able to handle an hour walking tour that has stops during it? If so, I highly recommend using the Chicago Greeter Instagreeter tours.
We went in May and did both the Loop and Millenium Park tours and they were great. We also did an architectural boat tour of the Chicago River that we really enjoyed (Chicago Architecture Foundation).
I would highly recommend doing an Architectural boat tour (or combined architectural boat tour on the river with skyline tour on the live). You can view schedules online and pick up at Navy Pier, as well as off Michigan Avenue.
What types of food do you like? We recently ate on Howells and Hood patio. The food is limited, but excellent. The Roof at the Wit hotel is a rooftop bar with a great view, fun to grab a drink that. There's also Terrace at Trump Tower for another outdoor roofbar. Signature Lounge at Hancock is indoors but great view and worth the $10 drink price tag.
You could visit Oak Street beach if you want to soak up some sun and get in the water.
For a quick "clean" food bite in the Loop, I'd recommend visiting Protein Bar or Pret a Manger.
There's free music Thurs and Mon nights at Millenium Park.
Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to look into these ideas, especially the tours. HZ, we like all kinds of food, especially Mexican and desserts, if "clean" desserts are possible!
If you're in Wrigleyville, you could come over to Southport (a few blocks west of Wrigley) and try Tango Sur (BYOB Argentinian steakhouse). There will be a wait, but it's worth it.
You could try Topolobampo or XOCO, both Rick Bayless Mexican restaurants downtown.
There's also Taste of Chicago going on right now in Grant Park with a variety of vendors.
Ditto the architectural boat tour, it was awesome!! I love the museums in Chicago, and perhaps you could rent a wheelchair at them to take your sister around (not sure what the physical condition is, but this might help?)
SOunds like an awesome mix of stuff to do here! I've never heard of George's and I'm a huge ice cream fan! Off to google!
eta: Ohhhh! I've gone by there several times but never tried it. How was it?
It was really good! I found it on a whim because we had dinner at Hopleaf (if you like craft beers, this place is a good stop) and I wanted something sweet afterward - I found George's on Yelp and it was a five-minute walk from Hopleaf. The surrounding neighborhood was really nice.
I got the salted caramel on a cone and it was delicious. I forget what MH ordered (something with peanut butter, I think) but he loved his as well.
mbcdefg - we love Hopleaf for beer! We still haven't eaten there yet though. I'm going to have to get up there and try some salted caramel. Yum! Thanks!
