All I have to say is I am impressed with your fitness skills even more.
Living in the sunny south, I've never had to dry soaking wet running shoes out- damp, yes, soaking- no. Unfortunately, I didn't know the newspaper trick, what kind of lameo runner am I?! My shoes are smelly now- any ideas on washing them to get the stank out?
obvi I can live with them being stinky, but I'd rather not if there is a good way to get the smell out.
A lot of people are super against washing running shoes, but if mine need to be washed for some reason, I just go ahead and throw them in the washer using normal detergent and cold water. I usually put them outside, propped up kind of upside down to dry, but the newspaper trick might work better, I haven't tried it.
I don't make a habit of washing my running shoes, by any means, but it sounds like yours may be mildewed, in that case I would probably do it.

Yep! I don't know how it happend! I did pretty much what you did- sprayed them off (I literally had mud caked on them!) and then propped them upside down in the sink.
I've used baking soda in shoes (in general) to get the stink out. Sprinkle some in. Leave overnight, and empty the shoe out in the morning. I've also used talc to do the same thing. Otherwise, I'd consider washing them. I use Stuffits in my cycling shoes, and the cedar chips help them smell good: store.stuffitts.com/For-Shoes-Originals-p/volsor.htm.
