As I'm prepping for IMLP, I came across some stuff from previous races, including this picture from 2008 (aka the year of the rain). I'm in there somewhere!
Yes. I'm not happy with it. There was never an issue with the swim in Lake Placid with the swim and I think the rolling start is going to cause problems.
That is absolutely wild!! I never stopped to think about the sheer number of people in the water at a big race like that. Looks a little frightening to me, but glad it's motivating for you.

Ah bummer . I heard people liked it a CDA (though I'm sure there were people who didn't like it that I just didn't read about). We have it at boulder, too.
I'm a little nervous about self seeding into a corral. Like, should I be strategic and align myself with one pace group faster bc everyone will over-estimate? Maybe i can catch faster feet? Do I line up with my actual pace and deal with being stuck behind the slow pokes that jumped in that corral?

Change is hard!
Best advice I've ever heard about self seeding for swimming: if you think you are fast go to the back, if you know you are fast go to the front.

Well, right. They break it up by pace though, like 1:20/100; 1:30/100: 1:40/100 etc. So I'm Normally around 1:40/100, and I would go in that corral. I'm sort of wondering if its going to be a cluster of 1:50/2:00/100s sneaking in higher, and if all the actual 1:40s will be sneaking in to 1:30s.

Just the obsessive ponderings of a first timer
Probably will happen. It happens at running races all of the time.

The rolling start will be interesting this year. I haven't done IMLP before, but pretty much every race I've done has had a mass start, and I've never had any major issues. I usually just hang back a second and let all the crazies go so I don't get beat up in the water TOO badly. I'm holding out hope that it will work just fine. Worrying about it now won't change anything, so I figure I'll just roll with it and see how it goes.
