So I have some friends that just moved to Houston. I had this great idea that we would take the train to visit them, then take a cruise out of Galveston or Houston for a short time while out there. It looks like there are only three boats that cruise from Galveston, and one if the Carnival Triumph.
That boat is the one that recently had that fire and had to be towed and it was all squalid with no power for days. But a 5 night cruise is only $500 for a balcony cabin so its kind of MM.
What say you? Would you cruise on the Triumph or avoid at all costs?
hell no. What about Carnival Magic? It is a newer boat.
Well I was kind of tempted by the shorter cruise - only 5 nights on the Triumph vs. 7 nights on the Magic. I'm not sure I love cruising enough for a 7 night outing...
Royal Caribbean cruises out of Galveston for 3-4 night trips. I know people who have gone for around $300 for an inside cabin so I think it can be mm for a balcony too. They liked it more than Carnival because the ship has more amenities (putt-putt, wave surfing, ice skating). This could be another option for you.
Absolutely not. We just went on a Disney cruise and a carnival ship was next to us in Port Canaveral. It looked like it was very poorly maintained in the outside. I can only imagine how other things are on that ship. I. Contrast, the Disney ship was immaculate. They were cleaning and painting at every stop we made.
I took a cheap cruise on the Triumph a couple years ago (before the nightmare). It looked exactly like the ships I've been on with Princess & Celebrity (tacky casino-esque decor).
With a major overhaul, I'm sure it's exactly like a brand new ship now. You can get unbiased reviews over on the cruise critic forums.
I wouldn't cruise on it now, simply because I have no desire to ever cruise again. But I am unbiased WRT that particular ship, and would go without hesitation if I were in the market for a cheap cruise.
I'm looking at March 2014 and am open to a beachy stay in Galveston. What is Galveston like? Will it be warm enough to sit on the beach, go swimming, etc?
I have limited dates because its spring break at the office.

I'd do the cruise over just hanging out in Galveston. It's not a very pretty part of the Gulf. The temps will be mid to upper 60s; not warm enough to hang out at the beach. The cruise will get you to warmer/prettier places.
I bet it's the safest boat to take right now, lol. Carnival will do anything to make sure that ship sails seamlessly
Ditto this. For a $500 balcony, I'd take the risk, but I like to live dangerously when a travel bargain is involved.
ETA--over the years I've cruised most cruise lines--Princess, RC, Norwegian, Carnival. Carnival was my least favorite, but it was also the cheapest by far. However, I was on a boat at spring break time, so that may have colored my opinion on the cruise. Food was okay.

Exactly. I was going to book the Triumph for Dec but the date I want is actually cheaper out of New Orleans on the Elation. So I booked that instead. I love crusing. I am going 2x this yr! I love the falling prices!

Actually I heard the decor has not changed(just new of the same old interior). If you don't like the casinoesque decor then try the Breeze it is the only CCL ship with that spa like decor. It is amazing! I wish carnival would change all their decor to that.

Once you go 7 you will never go back! I do 8 night ones now and would like to do a 14 or a back to back.
Probably, but I have more vacation days than I know what to do with so I wouldn't be bummed if it sucked. Also my first and only cruise in January was much better than I expected so I would like to try it again.

This. But you can bet that I'd be bringing extra supplies just in case there was an issue.
We got roped into a family reunion on the Carnival Dream, which I hear is actually a pretty nice ship. Regaedless my family is planning on bringing extra supplies bc you never know! Lol.

Ok, good to know. Our rich bitch aunt and uncle are the ones who planned it so I figured it had to be ok. I'm not into cruises in general, but I'll take your word for it we'll enjoy the trip

The Dream set sail in Nov/Dec 2010. So it is pretty darn new. It is second only to the Breeze which set sail May 2012. The only difference btwn the breeze and the dream is size (Breeze is larger) and decor (breeze is less casino esque). The breeze is the first and only ship by Carnival that uses a different designer so the feel is less gaudy and more spa like.
But if you can get past the look/decor of the Dream everything else (lay out, crew, food, fun) is basically the same. If you meet a blond haired waitress who has her hair in a bun in the dining room from Romania named Corina tell her I say hi. Best waitress ever (ask them to switch you to her table)
