On Sunday night at about 7, I was with both our DDs in DD1's bedroom. She ran out into the living room, and came back in, saying someone was there. At 3, she is very imaginative, so I didn't think much of it, so walked in there with her. There was a super high, seemingly homeless man standing in our dining room, completely out of it.
He had walked in the front door, through the living room and was in the dining room. I started shrieking hysterically and DH chased him out into the street. I called 911 and he was arrested. I still can't believe this happened. We always keep the door locked but had been unloading groceries. Lock your doors, ladies!!!
We are super freaked out about it. We have taken many security measures: new windows, new back door, motion sensor lights, but to just have someone waltz in when we are all home is insane. We have a small home with just one floor.
Will you have an opportunity to attend his court hearing? (If there is one?)
I'm not sure. Dd1 is so good about independent play, and dd2's nuseey is at the back of the house. I will just keep dd1 with us if we go back there now.
Since college, I've habitually locked doors behind me after I walk in (dorm room, apartment door...and now the exterior doors to our house.)
DH, however, does not, and it's a huge point of contention between us. I'm sure noone ever expects to have something like you had happen, but I definitely had college friends wake up to find strangers in their dorm rooms/houses. Despite telling DH that it bothers me, I'm constantly finding doors unlocked. Maybe I can borrow your story? He thinks I'm crazy for wanting them locked unless we're out in the yard or coming in and out.

Yep, I've always locked the deadbolt when I close the door out of habit. H never used to, but he does now. And this is a perfect example of why!
Yes, make sure you tell your husbands who think this is crazy. My H is often not home at 7 pm on a weeknight. I'm just not sure what I would have done alone as he was just a few steps from where we were in DD's room.
