So I don't think I have ever had a true "sports massage" - I have had several deep tissue massages where I asked them to focus on whatever was nagging me. I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about some shin pain I was having, and it really hasn't gone away. I'm beginning to think I might just have to give up on running...but that's another story- not there YET.
I went back to my podiatrist for a follow up on my stress fracture in my heel and I mentioned the soreness and he recommended a sports massage. Long story short- anything I need to prepare for/tell her? Also- how long before you know if it has helped or not? Podiatrist said that if it didn't help, that I needed to come back and see him b/c he wanted to do a bone scan & bone density test.
Also- how do I know if what is causing my aches could just be a weakness elsewhere and maybe I just need PT?
I know you all aren't Dr's but you know so much and I value your advice. TIA!
We have a massage studio that sponsors our tri club (10% off!), and one of the women there specializes in athletes. I loooove her, although sometimes during the massage it's a love/hate! She stretches some parts, especially around my hips, while massaging it. If I were having trouble with a large muscle group like that, I'd definitely seek out a sports massage. But for shins... I never really feel like massage does much for my shins. Icing, doing my exercises, and not touching them too much seems to be my best route there. You may find differently. If you give it a shot, definitely let him/her know what the history is and what the issues are. No real prep ahead of time except making sure you are super well hydrated, especially afterwards.

I think it's hard to define "sports massage." It's a mix of deep tissue, Swedish, stretching, and myofascial release, depending on what you need. You may need more than one session if you have chronic issues or tightness.
I've been wondering about the PT question myself. I have very tight hip flexors and glutes, but I'm not sure what PT can do for me that I can't do by self-stretching those areas and doing yoga.

Yea, in my non-doctor opinion, I think my underlying issue could be weak hips. PT could help that!
I feel like with me, even with the tightness you describe, having someone make me do the exercises would help- even if it was only a few sessions. Also, you would have the confirmation of your issue, which would be motivating for me to do the stretches on my own.

Good to know! I think the reason the doc suggested the massage was that my calves and the muscles along my shins were supet tight.

Weak hips were my undoing, and I thought I was in reasonably good shape. My core needs some work too as the chiropractor pointed out (which I also thought was in reasonably good shape). PT can't hurt.
I can recommend a couple of LMTs (licensed massage therapists) that work with athletes near you.
Sports massage is pain for me. It hurts so good! I feel better afterwards. I get at least one/month. I have a few problem areas, and it is great to get the knots worked out of them.

I got a rec from Dr.J- going to see her tonight- I think I might schedule PT too. I can't be out from running again it does bad things to my brain.
OhEmmGee...that hurt so good. Good/bad news is that we think I might have been right about a weakness in my hips. My left hip flexor was a mess, I practically came off the table when she went to work on it- right side NBD. Hopefully this helps.
