More of a question for my H but does anyone have anyone have any experience dealing with it.
H finally got clearance from the hand surgeon to start working out again but his hip is still really bugging him from the bike crash. He hasn't worried about it too much since his wrist was the bigger issue but he's really itching to run again. He went to a chiro today to make sure everything was aligned right and he was diagnosed with bursitis.
The chiro told him just pretty much just has to rest and ice (anti-inflammatory meds out out because the interfere with bone healing) for another 3-5 weeks. We're trying to figure out if he should see a PT or sports med doctor or just rest. He's already been off it for almost 4 weeks so it's just starting to seem like a really long time with almost no improvement.
This is what I had. I did rest, ice, and NSAIDS for 4 weeks and it helped, but ended up needing PT in the end. After about 6 weeks of that I was healed and haven't had issues since.
I've seen that mentioned but I've always thought of it was something more to mask the pain rather than actually heal it. He really just wants to make sure it gets healed up right.
And thanks @sessalee. The chiro said avoid as much movement as possible but it's good to know PT can help too.
Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory. It actually reduces inflammation - it doesn't mask the pain. Since the bursa on the hip is down deeper than say.. the bursa on the knee.. ice doesn't help much. (This is all taken from my sports doctor who treated me for hip bursitis in May)
Hip bursitis is also a symptom of a bigger issue - so he would need to figure out what the bigger issue is and treat that so that the bursitis doesn't recur. For me, I had knots in my piriformis muscles. Once I worked on that (sitting on a tennis ball and massaging it for days) the bursitis healed... so PT can help once the bigger issue is found.

I didn't do PT for the first month, it was after the hip pain subsided and I was left with ITBS.
I know this is an old thread but how is everyone doing?
After two rounds of PT to strengthen my hip muscles, Graston, ultrasound, I think a cortisone shot would help alleviate the constant pain in my hip as I believe that I need to continue to strengthen and stretch my hip muscles but my hip bursa is so irritated, I cant touch it, sleep on that side and looking in a mirror I can see the inflammation on one hip compared to the other.
I've been keeping up with PT since my hip bursitis went away and was left with an aching in my lower back on the right side. Went in for an MRI, which showed degeneration and impacting in my facet joints at L4-L5. Had a facet injection on Tuesday - the pain in my back is gone AND the pain in my hip AND an extra bonus, the nagging pain on the outside of my foot is gone as well.
Still doing PT to strengthen and traction to lesson the impact.
Oh, and then I fell and sprained my ankle last night, so that pain is taking over everything anyway. Ha.
