Lawyers. My lawyer friend said this. "Remember, just because a court of law finds a Defendant Not Guilty does not mean that the Defendant is Innocent. Sometimes the correct verdict is not the right verdict."
Agree or disagree?

well, "not guilty" is not synonymous with "innocent." it's a legally and linguistically accurate statement.

Does he mean the verdict could be the correct one based on the law and the evidence before the court but still wrong in the sense that Zimmerman really did murder Trayvon Martin? If so, I agree. Just because the outcome isn't what we would have liked doesn't mean that the legal system sucks or that the jurors screwed up.
I also wonder if the jurors will go into hiding for awhile.

I think this is what ppl are getting at when they talk about the prosecutorial failings. Yes, the man is guilty, but the prosecution did a poor job, and 12 people think there is still reasonable doubt. The system of Innocent until Proven Guilty worked as designed. Blame the prosecutor or the Stand Your Ground laws or the police etc etc.
Thanks, cville and @tambcat . I like this guy and I want him to be right. A lot of his lawyer friends seem to be disputing the "right" vs "correct" part - ie, if Zimmerman is not innocent, a Not Guilty verdict is neither right nor correct. Maybe they're the bottom of their class lawyers, lol.

I hate "debates" like this. What is there to debate? Ooh, semantics.

They must be baby lawyers.
Ding ding ding!
ETA, just graduated, so I shouldn't even call them lawyers. I've had to hide some of these people because I'm tired of daily instagram pics of their barbri books.

If I see one more mention of a, yes, heartbreaking yet fairly typically motivated murder perpetrated by black males on pretty white girls I'm gonna fucking lose my shit. Not the same thing, douchebag family. Apples. Oranges.

No, you really shouldn't.
They are most definitely not lawyers.
They are irritating law graduates who haven't even taken and/or passed the bar exam.

They are the worst people in the world.
Well, in my defense, the friend whose status it is *has* taken the bar and is a real lawyer, if a baby one. Most of the people engaging in the debate are a year below him... which just supports your earlier statements.
What about the jurors? Do they receive some special protection? I'm sure there is a lot of hatred toward them right now.
Central Floridian here.
In the Casey Anthony trial, the jurors did not receive special protection. They didn't even show up to the interview session after the trial - they all hauled ass and hid. They knew Florida, America, the WORLD would be out to get them. Several packed up and moved out of state.
I do wonder about this case what these jurors will think in the coming days.
I'm pretty sickened to be a Central Floridian tonight, let alone a Floridian. Really, the state just needs to have this done to it: gifb.in/VYbV
Um, one of my friends just posted "Ugh, the world is horrific- do we need to perpetuate the gloom though?" And I'm either irrationally mad or justifiably annoyed. Like, am I not suppose to talk about it? Putting your head in the sand doesn't make shit like this go away. I'm sorry everyone's blowing up your newsfeed, but we should all be outraged about this. Publicly outraged.

The simple fact that 911 told him to stay in his car and wait and yet he took it upon himself to stalk and scare the hell out of the kid just does me in. Even if he was acting in self defense, he caused the whole incidence. I want to delete plenty of people in fb. Between the abortion shit here and now this? I clearly need to move. Only 4 more years till dd is out of school and I can get the hell out of this fucking place.
"I know I watched most of it. Again, what facts do you have? They didnt disclose much to the news. They kept much of the factual evidence concealed from the public. 12 people from all kinds of backgrounds had everything and didnt see enough there to convict him? That means there was reasonable doubt."
Really? Watched enough of it to not know that there were only 6 jurors? Not 12.
Omg. Help me.
There's a name for it - jury nullification. The jury refuses to convict due to perceived injustice in the law or, in this case, due to jury prejudice.
Or, as others have said, the prosecutors did an exceedingly crappy job. An unarmed child was chased down, shot and killed. How is this not at least manslaughter? It's a complete travesty.
For the most part, prosecutors would rather take a shitty, hard to prove case to trial rather than dismiss it outright because they're scared of losing.
First, thank you for not making fun of me for my question. I feel like an idiot on this topic, as usual. But could the difficulty of the case/lack of proof explain the reluctance elle mentioned? Maybe I am reading tone wrong, but it seems like people are insinuating that the prosecutors didn't want to take the case because they were happy to see a black boy killed by a white man, or just didn't care. I admit I'm taking the Florida sucks comments both here and on my BMB a little personally.
I didn't see what elle wrote, so I can't reference that. But I did read some of the prosecutor's post-trial statements. It seems like they anticipated what the jury would most likely do from the get-go, and handled the trial more as a fact-finding exercise for the public. For example, there is a judicial district in my county that is notorious for hating police officers. If I tried a case there where the officer was the primary/sole witness, or was the victim, then I know I am facing an uphill battle for a conviction no matter how good the facts are for me. Because people in that area just hate & distrust all cops. They just do. But I couldn't just dismiss the case outright because then it just feeds the idea of "omg you must be hiding something Abbott those cops!" So the prosecution's perceived attitude may have been more about resignation to an outcome, rather than an actual lack of caring.

Fuck. Just fuck.
My heart is absolutely shattered. I'm not sure if its pregnancy talking, or if I've just become hyper-emotional, but just looking at Trayvon's parents was enough to make me full-on ugly cry.
It's beyond comprehension to me. If he stayed in his car a child would be alive today. It's as simple as that and now he walks free. The message this sends our kids is that you can never be truly safe anymore.
This just blows my mind. If fucking nothing else he shouldn't be allowed to own a gun ever again. I seriously think he will shoot someone else in his lifetime.

Unless he goes underground I'm not sure he will have a chance.
