I must have eaten something I was allergic to tonight. I broke out in hives along my stomach and sides. It happens when I eat the foods I'm allergic to (garbanzo beans, chickpeas, and lentils). I don't think anything I had at the Mexican restaurant had any of those in it. I had black beans, a cheese quesadilla, rice, and salsa. So far I've taken generic Allegra and 2 Benadryl. There are still a few hives on my right side that are itching. Up next will be cortizone cream.
I usually take benadryl, end up cracking out cause that's what benadryl does to me, and curl up in a ball and whine non-stop. I don't suggest taking that route. I hope you feel better soon.
If it's really bad, I would go to the doctor. For me some Claritin or Benadryl usually does the trick.
It wasn't bad enough to go to the doctor, and the hives are all gone this morning. I just break out in hives--no breathing problems, etc. It's just itchy and annoying.
I've only had hives once and, from what I could determine, it was from stress (lots of stress). Benadryl and a topical Benadryl did the trick, but it took a couple of days.
Ugh, I had hives for 8 weeks last fall. 8 weeks!! It was the worst thing ever. I went to see every kind of Dr. under the sun and no one had any explanation, and then poof, they went away.
Anyway, the Rx antihistamine Atarax worked best but it makes you super tired. It might be good to have a prescription in hand though for if it happens again. Also, oddly enough, H2 blockers (like Pepcid) can be added to your normal antihistamine (taken at the same time), and help even more.
