My GYN gave me some samples of Nuvaring a few months ago to see if I liked it and I did - I noticed no side effects. About a week and a half ago I started the normal prescription and I've been a hot mess ever since. I'm crying over everything which is extremely unusual for me. I'm usually really good about handling stress or frustration and it's like that filter has been removed.
No, there's no difference between samples and the full Rx kind. How many months has it been since you started? It could just have taken you this long to get the build up for side effects. Each time I started a new BC pill before, I wouldn't have any side effects until around month 3 of being on it continuously. There's definitely an adjustment period for any kind of hormonal birth control.
I think I read somewhere that it takes 3-6 months to get use to side effects of BC. I remember when I first started taking pills, I have no ill effects for the first 1-2 months and then BAMALAMA I am a mess for a few months afterwards. Maybe this is the case?
I've been on it for about 4 months now, give or take, so I guess I'm just now experiencing side effects. Please tell me these subside eventually. I hate being an emotional mess.

Yep, all of this. If it's been 4 months already, you're past the initial 'getting used to' period. You should make an appointment with your GYN to see what they suggest. I did this a few weeks ago and she changed me to a new pill. Hopefully this one will be better for me.
Its possible they'll subside or lessen. Thats why doctors usually say to stick with a new bc for at least 3 months to get an idea of the side effects. Personally, both kinds of BC pills I tried just kind of stayed the same once the side effects kicked in. They definitely made me way more emotional all month long, and I'm emo as is.
I'd suggest sticking it out another month or two to see if anything changes or talk to the doc if you can't stand the side effects.

I'll admit I don't really know how Nuvaring works, but my Mirena kind of snowballed for me over the course of the first 3-12 months I had it. I went from zero side effects to gradually ramping up to I-kind-of-hate-this-thing.
