So maybe its just near where i live (though i doubt it) there are, every now and again, these little bike route signs, with arrows. Ive tried to follow them (in my car, im yet to venture out of my neighborhood on my bike yet) but they disappear, since im guessing theyre old and arent maintained. Does anyone know what these are?Ive googled everything i could think of, and have come up with nothing. Theyre usually on roads where there are tons of cyclists anyway, but im curious what the planned routes are, where they go, how long they are, etc.
Those are called Dan Henries. They are used to mark rides in your area. We used them yesterday on our ride. They tell you where to turn etc. I wouldn't trust them unless you actually know where they go. The different colors mark different routes put on by bike clubs etc" They will fade eventually!
THANK YOU! I had a feeling they had a name! Its been driving me nuts. Theyre all over, so i figured theyre a good place to start after i get comfortbale on the road.
"Dan Henries" or road marks are on the ground/pavement and are typically painted. The green signs are sometimes placed by local governments or bike organizations in conjunction with a government entity. We have some here in Georgia, but they lead to no where. In Northwest Georgia, the organization the started placing the signs had problems with people stealing or damaging them. The project was never completed. When riding north of Atlanta near Cartersville, Adairsville, Rome, etc. you will see the signs.
Here is the organization in NW GA I'm speaking of: www.bwnwga.org/
Actually, this has all been super helpful. I wS referring to.the green signs like what sadlebred poated, but ive also seen dan henries and no clue what theyvwere either.
So i learned twice as much as expected. Im pretty sure i can leave work now
My town has signs like the one that Sadle posted, my town's website has a map of the bike routes and our visitor's center and local bike shop have small maps of them. You might try looking at your town's website or asking at a local bike shop.
We also have plenty of "Dan Henries" as well, but (here at least) they are typically tough to follow unless you have an idea of where you are supposed to be going anyway and there isn't a good way to get maps of these markers here.
"Dan Henries" are usually for a specific ride. One of the bike shops I ride out of has several different routes marked. One is with a "V" for the "Vinings" ride, one is a "W" for the "Wednesday" ride, and one is a "6" for the "Six Flags" ride. Unless you know the general route where the Dan Henries go, it's hard to follow them.
