Just chillin' at our favorite lobster pot hang out...
But be careful! They like to nip at your fins!
This was at the Isle of Shoals, right off of Portsmouth, NH. There were seals everywhere. It was amazing. We saw up to 6 at a time while diving and as you can see, they were not afraid of us!
Awesome! I'm so jealous that you scuba dive! H and I tried to do it, passed the class and pool portion but we both basically had panic attacks during our open water dive and gave up. We'll stick to snorkeling I guess!
Wow, that is awesome!!! Did you guys have any shark worries? I saw on the news this morning to get out of the water if you see seals, because where there are seals there are sharks. Maybe thats just a Cape issue though.
oops... I didn't even think about sharks! It's very rare that they make it farther north than the Cape -- the water is too cold, so it didn't even cross our minds.
Seal dives are pretty common at the Isle of Shoals. One of our dive buddies has a boat and has gone several times, but said this is one of the best dives he's had. It was my first boat diving trip in New England; I've only done shore dives in the past. As we were approaching the islands we could see a few dozen heads pop up, look at us and then disappear, so we knew it was going to be a good dive
Seals are pretty curious creatures. They started swimming up to us within about 10 minutes and never left. At one point I looked down and a seal was RIGHT underneath me (probably 4 feet away), just looking up at me. It startled me, so my eyes went wide and involuntarily jerked my body in panic. It scared the poor seal and HIS eyes went wide and he had a look of panic and then swam off. It was funny how closely he mimicked me!
noodleoo -- where did you try diving in open water? It's so much fun! You shouldn't give up hope yet!
