midwest07, get in here and tell us about your basement!
Ha. Well, I wish it was super fancy and then I would post photos of it. Right now, it still includes some cast off/old furniture and such. When we moved in, the previous owners had kind of a black/grey/white shag carpet (not old, but still shag).
So we decided to work with the carpet since black is one of the colors of my alma mater. Then we painted the other color from my alma mater on the wall (a more muted version of that color). For curtains, I used grey and white striped ones from Target. Like I said, we still have old furniture, but the plan is to eventually upgrade, and we will go with black wood (say for coffee/end tables) and dark grey or possibly grey/white striped for furniture. This is our really casual living space and has the big TV for movies and watching sports, so we want to keep it comfortable and casual.
Really all of this stuff above doesn't scream college colors with the grey and white added in, but then all of the decor in the basement is college related - framed prints, photo frames, a few pillows, mascot figurines, a lamp, etc. I have collected so much of this since I graduated and didn't really want it all over the rest of the house, so it made sense to put it in one place. In addition, some of the prints are quite nice (mostly graduation gifts) and I would have hated to just stick them in a closet.
I guess I should also admit all of this stuff was mine and it was my idea, not my husband's. He doesn't share the affinity for our school as I still do! One day I would love a more grown up version of all of this, such as a nice wood bar area and more expensive memorabilia, such as signed footballs, jerseys, etc. I have seen this where it's done really well and isn't obnoxious (well, unless it's of a certain rival team I don't like!)
The closest room to that that I envision in my house will be the basement. Right now there is nothing great to PIP. It's a messy basement that happens to have a wall mounted TV and a couple bike trainers. In the winter there are road bikes on the trainer. I want to decorate with motivating pictures from our races. It will be our inspiration-filled workout room for offseason. I don't feel much compulsion to be subtle with it.
The room is painted the brown in the poster. The ottomans are field green. DH's collection of signed baseballs and signed gloves are the other art work. They are in lucite boxes that are hung on the walls. I want to replace DH's black leather couch (it seems like every single guy buys a black leather couch) with a leather sectional but that is pricey so we are saving up. The pillows are a mix of white leather with red stitching that mimic a baseball and pillows from his favorite team. In the winter, I add a red throw. The challenge is too keep it from looking childish while still maintaining the baseball theme.
My office has a bunch of horsey stuff in it- but I wouldn't say that it is overwhelming. Mementos from horse camping trips, my favorite horse's bridle hanging on a wall, foxhunting prints on the wall.
