After walking Patsy's coworker's dog this afternoon, we went to the store, because Patsy's out of ice cream. Zoe was warm and irritable, so I went straight over to the clif bars, got one of the "kid" ones, opened it up and let her eat it while we shopped. I held the wrapper and paid for it, but I figured doing that was better than having her throw an epic fit in the store, especially when I remember how low our stock was on salad fixings and I had to get all that stuff.
I'm not usually comfortable doing it, not only because I'm afraid I'll forget but also because I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression. I'm more likely to go through express check out with just that thing and then continue shopping after I paid for it.
I'll do it, but I'll get two of the same thing so the cashier doesn't have to scan a slobbery germy mess of something if the kid touches it. I'll do that with pouches, so there's no way around them touching it.
See, I think that's normal! I was in H&M with my mom once and Audrey started screaming so my mom picked up a crinkle book they had on sale. We gave it to her and I took off the tag while my mom took A out of the store. When I gave the salesperson the tag along with the clothes I was buying he freaked out and yelled at me that that's stealing and I can't do that and I'm going to have to bring the book back in order to check out. I was so mad and was very tempted to forget the clothes and just not go back and actually steal the book.

That reminds me of buying shoes when I was a kid. My mom would always put our old shoes in the box and go pay while we wore the new ones out.
It's stealing. Even if you pay for it after. As is eating grapes/fruit from the produce section before you pay for it.
I would have paid for the food, given it to LO and then continued shopping.
Doing that with produce is stealing because you pay based on weight. I don't see the issue if its a single, bar-coded item. Maybe I'm just more trusting of the general public though.

How is that stealing? I get it with produce by the pound, but the store doesn't lose anything if I pay for a clif bar or fruit pouch, regardless of when my son eats it.
I do this almost every time I shop because my kid demands food in the store even if he's full when we arrive. The cashiers just ring the empty wrapper/pouch through as normal.

I think Claire's tendency for snacking during errands trained me well, and I always have a stock pile of snacks in my purse or diaper bag, so I've never had to do this.
I don't think its stealing either. As long as you pay for the item, I feel like its ok. I think its silly to walk all the way to the front of the store, pay for an item, then continue shopping. That's theft of my time!
It's stealing because at the time that LO is eating the product, it still belongs to the store. What if you loose the wrapper? What if you forget? What if a salesperson sees you and demands to see a receipt? The ownership of an item is not transferred until the point of sale. Your intention doesn't matter, you do not own the item, therefore it is stealing. Any store will have a case to prosecute you for shoplifting if they choose. Most stores won't bring charges for this, but it is still stealing.

Me too. I always have snacks when we go out.
I don't think it's stealing, but I think it's kind of bad manners do this. Some of my friends do it and I don't like it, personally.
I also want to teach my kids that you don't open something until you pay for it. I feel this is an important thing for kids, esp. as my DS1 is 4 now.

If I was the cashier, I would have demanded to see the book as well. How was he to know you didn't take something more expensive and were just pretending that was the real tag? You can't just walk out of the store with something you haven't paid for.
As for the opening things and eating them before paying, I think it's bad form, especially to do it regularly. It can also run you the risk of forgetting. A couple of years ago there was a couple who was arrested for theft because they forgot the woman had eaten a sandwich while shopping. It happens.

But if I was going to do that, why would I give a tag at all?

I guess I should take snacks in the store, but I would have to take something in a tin or other container, because if I took a granola bar, in a wrapper, couldn't they assume I had picked it up in the store and was stealing it?

I always have crackers in a Tupperware, or sometimes I cut up fruit in a container.
I do this sometimes but usually bring snacks wherever I go. There have been many times for myself I have done this with a drink. I guess I steal a grape or two every time I buy them because I won't buy them if they are sour so I eat one. Oh well.
I would laugh at any cashier that was rude about that. Or an employee that harassed me for "stealing" the item. They legally cannot accuse you of stealing anything. I would do it for sure. I took the tags off of a new bra, paid for it, and wore it out of the store. I was tired of my boobs spilling out of the top of my bra. I'm very aware of the wrapper and wouldn't forget it.
I think things are more relaxed over there. You wouldn't get away with that here. I have worn stuff new, but it's expected you pay for it first, then go back and put it on. Maybe the stores are smaller but I've worn new things this way under view of the saleswoman.

We, typically, walk to the grocery store, but the dog I was walking lives 3 miles away, and I'm not walking 3 miles, walking a dog, and then walking home in 90+ degree weather. Zoe's chill in her stroller, she gets hot and pissed in her car seat. This is an unusual situation for us. I'll remember to bring her snacks from now on, even though the cashier didn't so much as blink at the empty wrapper.

I think a big part of it is the "customer is always right" mentality in the States.
