MH and I are going to be off for 11 days together in August. He really wants to do something as a family, and mentioned spending a couple of nights away. He mentioned seeing a 3 day cruise for under $300, but then we would have to fly and I would really rather not. Besides, I don't think a cruise would be much fun with her at this age. So what do you think a good vacation would be with a 16 month old? I would be willing to drive a few hours (from the Jersey Shore area) and I'd like to keep it under $1,000. Any ideas?
Not sure how far it is for you or if you're into it, but we rented a cabin in the shenandoah valley in Virgina and went hiking and stuff in the mountains and it was really fun. But only if you're into hiking heh.
I don't like cruises but I do love beach vacations. We just had ours last week and besides Lillian getting sick it was fun. She loved the sand and the water and it was relaxing.
katie, I went swimming at a friend's house today and I brought 3 bags with me. The thought of bringing all that plus chairs, umbrellas, toys, etc and sand everywhere gives me hives. But my skin is practically translucent, so... (hot)

Haha! We stayed at a timeshare for a week and I overpacked beyond belief. I carried L and one tote with her sippy, wipes, sunscreen, towel, camera, extra swim diapers to the beach. H carried the rest: Cooler, canopy, toys and chairs. It really wasn't that bad!
I have to say the sand was annoying but only because she continually ate it, like shoveled it in. She also rubbed her eye and I had to rinse her eye out. She rolled around in the sand like a happy puppy. I'd still go again

As somebody who has cruised with a child, I don't think I'd recommend it at this age. Unless you go for a pricey Disney one, there isn't going to be much for V to do. On most boats, kids who aren't potty trained aren't even allowed in the pool.

Aww, the happy puppy part may have convinced me!
muppetinma, thanks for the info. As much as I love cruising, I don't see it being very fun at this stage.

I suggest a beach vacay. Stay on the beach so lugging toys and such is kept to a minimum. L loves to sit in the sand and walk in waves and play with his bucket and shovel. And if you stay somewhere with a kitchen, you won't have to go out to eat often
what do you like to do on vacation? Lake George (NY) can be really pretty and there's lots to do. I remember playing at a beach on the lake when I was little and you can hike and hang out too.

What about a urban vacation? Those are my favorite. I might be the last person to have discovered this but you can rent private residences for a fraction of the price of hotels at www.airbnb.com
