No. No way. We only have air in our bedrooms (window) due to the fact that we live in an old home and it would require a major home overhaul to install a/c. It's 91f outside right now and only about 10* cooler inside. We have spent the entire evening, including dinner, in our bedrooms. No way no how would I willingly sleep in that kind of heat.
Thankfully for us, this crap only lasts 2-3 weeks a year.
We came to town for a funeral in the summer. A summer heat wave. And stayed with his aunt, in the designated guest room in the basement. I could tolerate it, DH was beyond disturbed and he and his brother went on a quest (unfulfilled) for fans. Torture.
I don't think a hotel room has to break your visit. If all you need is a cool place to sleep, you can manage that with lots of family time during the day. Just spend LOTS of family time in the 91 degree heat houses during the day. Hopefully they won't be 90+ degree houses all the time. And you will all go on water-based, cool activities, right? And then the cool hotel at night.
We have central air and I've got the temp set at meat locker. I would die or kill people if it were 91º in my bedroom.
Its so friggen hot here in Mass and I have my central set to meat locker too. i am sitting here in sweatpants and a sweatshirt. that is how I like it best LOL
If I were your SIL I would book a room at the same hotel. It was nice of her to warn you, and it will be a lot better visit knowing you won't spontaneously combust during the night.
UPDATE: Hotel room is booked. Bonus: the hotel has a (indoor) pool. We will meet SIL for brunch, pm and dinner at their house, then we will leave to go to my parents. It is supposed to cool down during the night saturday, but I don't know that I want to risk it, lol.
Haha we went to stay with a friend since our ac went out today and the house was 88 degrees when we left. I cannot wait for new ac to come on Thursday! Addy was fine up until we left at 7:30 or so and she was beginning to melt down, as was dh.
the same? Their house is like 200 yo. The windows are the type that open inwards and can only be full open or full closed. Because of their toddler and the windows being low, they gave to keep them closed most of the time.
Sure I would. It would be no different than our home without A/C. It's currently 86 degrees downstairs (at midnight); our bedroom is upstairs which is a few degrees warmer.
I'd ask them if they have a few spare fans for the guest room, and if they don't, I would bring ours. But I certainly wouldn't pay for a hotel room!
Depends on my budget. I'm notoriously cheap, and don't mind sleeping naked under the fan (I don't have ac at my place, so maybe I'm just used to it?) so I probably would. If I was rolling in money, I might book a hotel. Then again, if I was rolling in money I would probably get ac at home and pay for more than minimal heat in the winter.
We had a window unit in the kitchen and living room one summer. Our house was 100 years old and we were poor. I had no idea it wasn't normal.
I imagine it's much easier when you don't know any different.
I hope.
I have a friend whose parents just got there first FAN, last year. He is an adult & has his own family with AC. His patents were appalled, but then His Mom admitted they weren't much better because she had " broken down" and bought a fan that year, after all those years when, they just never had one. These are NOT poor people FYI. I mean I get that they live in coastal MA, but seriously, we all need a fan sometimes.
BIL & SIL have a/c and never turn it on, they're used to the heat and just put a fan on. We not only turned it on in our room at night when we stayed but I'd go up earlier so it would start cooling the room. I'd rather contribute to their bill (they didn't ask nor accept) than melt.

No. It's currently 80° in our place, 75 in the bedroom, and H and I are so whiny about it. We're used to our bedroom being 65 - the AC is just no match for the heat right now. Plus, H gets itchy when he sweats and his eczema flares up, so he'd just be double miserable in 91° temps inside.
