I was checking out the ML board and saw them discussing addiction being a disease and it made me wonder about sex addiction. Do you think someone can actually be addicted to sex? Like Tiger woods, or is it just a cop out? Do you think it can qualify as a disease?
Hmm idk, I guess I would consider that an addiction but I don't know about a disease. I would put it at the same level as addictions to shopping or food.
I think it can be a disease. However, I don't know if Tiger was addicted or not. I think it's one of those addictions that people throw out there without having a real diagnosed disease.
Like the shopping addicts on Horders. You can't look at them and how they react to treatment and not see that it is a debilitating disease.

I know there are studies to suggest food addiction (at least binge eating disorder) can be linked to mild OCD and low doses of medication can actually manage it. I guess if it's similar to that then yes? It's not the same as drug/alcohol addiction because it's not physiological (ie you can stop sex cold turkey without physical withdrawal symptoms, I would assume) but I've heard people with other addictions get the same rush/high psychologically. Apparently the same pleasure centers of the brain are stimulated.
I agree with wildcatprincess. I would think most of the addictions discussed here , sex, hoarding, shopping, are linked to OCD.
Yes, I just think people tend to write off these addictions because they're "enjoyable". When it is anything but for people who are truely suffering and have their life ruined over these things.

No, I totally agree and get it. Same with addictions like gambling...it's really sad.
