Radio show host offers Zimmerman witness a full ride to college 8 hrs ago
After watching Piers Morgan's interview Monday with Rachel Jeantel, a key witness in George Zimmerman's trial, radio personality Tom Joyner was so moved that he decided to do something extraordinary. During his Tuesday program, Joyner called Jeantel to express his admiration for her and offer to personally help her attend a historically black college or university. "I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full-ride scholarship to any HBCU you'd like," he promised. His generous offer isn't just a random grand gesture: Joyner has a foundation that provides full rides to HBCUs.
I didn't read the comments. And now I don't intend to. I think it's fantastic that she has this opportunity. She's earned it many, many times over with all the hateful comments she's had to bear simply because she was the wrong person at the wrong place at the wrong time, and she did her duty (which is a hell of a lot more than a lot of "I hate jury duty how can I get out of this?" adults can lay claim to.) She took the stand and laid herself open, was attacked in court and in the "court" of public opinion. It's amazing of Tom Joyner to do this, and I hope that whichever university she chooses to attend gives her scholarships, living expenses, housing, educational support and whatever else they can give her to make sure she stays there.
Blah blah blah, black racists, blah blah blah, Trayvon was a punk, blah blah blah, plenty of people work hard and deserve the opportunity more due to boot straps. <- everything in the comments.
It's raising my blood pressure.
Anyway, that's amazing, and I hope she's able to take advantage of the opportunity!
