Our dining room desperately needs to be updated/refreshed. I don't have a lot of options w/ the furniture. I can't replace it right now, and I also can't repaint or stain... so I need to work with it. So I've decided to start with a chandelier. For whatever reason, when we bought this house 5 years ago, our realtors (who have amazing style) mentioned that the ceiling was too short for a chandelier- 8 ft. So I just put a chandelier out out of my mind. I have since come to realize that a chandelier is totally doable and nearly necessary Our dining room is the first room you see when you enter our house and I really want the chandy to make a statement and be badass. And also be under $500 Here's our dining room: and the two chandeliers I'm eying. If you have another suggestion, I would love it! #1 www.westelm.com/products/6982391/?catalogId=13&bnrid=3918508&cm_ven=Google_PLA&cm_cat=Lighting&cm_pla=Chandeliers_+_Pendants&cm_ite=West_Elm_Large_Rectangle_Hanging_Capiz%2C_White&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=31-187645924-2
I'm also searching for a new rug, possibly new paint, and maybe window treatments. However, I can't do drapes bc our sweet 100# dog likes to lay under the windows and they would be covered in fur :/. My goal for this room is to update and brighten and go from so traditional to more transitional.
As you have the room now, neither of those chandies seems as if it would play nicely with your furniture.
For the record, I prefer #2. I saw #1 in the store and it's kind of cheap looking. The floor model was shedding pieces already.
I wonder if slipcovering the chairs would give the room a fresh and eclectic vibe that would work with more edgy lighting. I had London shades in my dining room; they were semi sheer linen and gave the room a soft finish and textural interest. The fullness would help bridge all the hard lines in the room with your curvier dining set.
I hear you on accommodating pets. DS's cat had a bad reaction to some meds and ate huge chunks out of my shades on afternoon. Grrr. It took me a couple days to extract all the threads from his damned teeth.
Hmm, I honestly don't think West Elm stuff will go very well with your current room/furniture. You might be better off checking out Shades of Light or Pottery Barn or a local lighting shop to find something that will go better with your current room.
It's transitional and can be whatever you want it to be. It's simple and clean, it comes in three different finishes, and you pick whichever shades you like for your space.

munkii- I really like that, thanks for the link. It doesn't have the WOW factor that I'm wanting, but you are all right, since I'm not changing my furniture, it might work. Hmph... I just love that Capiz shade! Thanks!
I don't really love any of them. #2 has potential, but I feel like it's something I need to see in person.
Your home is very traditional right now and the lighting you are choosing is much more modern/sleek. I'm in favor of mixing styles, but I think those lighting fixtures will look out of place.
I'm breaking the budget rules here, but I wanted to at least give some examples of some lighting options that I think might be a good mix of the two styles that would go nicely with your furniture while making an impact:
PS. I don't know why you were advised against a chandelier. Our house had 8ft ceilings and we had a chandelier above our table and it looked nice. So long as the proportions and height are ok, it should be fine.
