Runners, do you need a period of time to break-in your new shoes? At what point would you decide that shoes just don't work for you?
I just switched from Brooks Glycerin 10s to Asics Gel-Nimbus 15s. I liked the Brooks well enough, but I felt like my feet were sliding around too much, especially in the front. When I tried the Asics on, they felt great and I loved the cushioning. However, after 2 short runs, I feel like something is "off" with them. On the outside of my right foot, it almost feels like something is in the shoe, right in the area of the big stripe? I know I probably need to give them more time, right? When I bought the Glycerins, I was fairly new to running, so I was only doing a few miles at a time, but now I am up to about 20 mpw.
I have both the Nimbus 14s and 15s; I am currently alternating them. (My 14s have speed laces, so I use them for bricks & tri's; my 15s are just for running.) My 15s are pretty new, but I didn't need to break them in at all.
I really like them, but the forefoot has kind of a strange shape. It hugs my foot just right, so I love it, but if it's off for you, it's off. I tried the Saucony Rides at the same time, and they felt kind of featureless by comparison, as far as interior shape. But maybe they would be worth a try for you if the Nimbus shape is no bueno. They are super plush, but that won't help if the shape is wrong. Doesn't sound to me like they are The Shoe for you.
I think it depends on what feels off. Some shoes you DO have to break in. I love my pureflows, but immediately out of the box, they feel a little stiff. It takes a few weeks of runs for them to loosen up & really feel flexible. What you're describing doesn't really sound like a breaking in issue though. If it's hitting your foot in a weird way, it will probably continue to do so.
They shouldn't need to be broken in, but sometimes it can take a few runs for a new pair to feel like "mine." Of course if there was any pain or a fit issue, I'd take them back. I think in my case it's just a matter of going from rubbed-flat soles to newer grippier ones that throws me for a dozen miles or so.
they shouldn't need to be broken in, but it takes me awhile with each new pair of shoes to get the laces the right tightness so they feel kind of off for the first few runs. no pain though.
I do remember having a pair of asics where the logo always rubbed my pinky toe the wrong way way back when though. everything else was fine with them. I think I got 500 miles out of those shoes but I've never bought another pair of asics.

Hmm, thanks for the replies. Structurally, the shoes feel great, but I do wonder if they are sort of just squished on the side from being in the box. Either way, I'm thinking that I'll give them the weekend and see how they feel.
Haha, or maybe I just don't want to give them up because I love the colors (I bought the pink and green ones! ) and I know that I'll end up going back to the ugly Glycerins.
It sounds like they might be a little too narrow...like what you're feeling on the side is the edge of the shoe? The Nimbus is a skinny shoe compared to the Glycerin.

If it feels like it might be pushed him, exchange them for another pair. It is possible to have warped features from packaging. You might also like the mizuno wave rider. Not as cush but great rebound

Those are the ones I have too. (heart)
I actually really like most of the colors they come in. Sorry they aren't working out for you
