I shave my chin/under my chin and upper lip. I've been doing it for years. It does not grow back thicker, it grows back the same as it was before shaving. However, now you have to keep it up.
In the summer hair grows a lot quicker due to heat and in the winter the hair grows a lot slower, so you might have to do it more often in the summer.
The things we do for a few hairs. I've plucked them out numerous times but man, plucking your upper lip hurts!
Isn't it supposed to grow back darker and coarser? Good luck!
Total myth.
One of the many places I've read that debunks this myth is in the book "Why do men have nipples?" or maybe it was the sequel "Why do men fall asleep after sex?" Good reads.
A few years ago the light hairs on my face seemed to thicken. They were still light, but they looked thicker. And when I would apply foundation, it felt cakey and it was bothering the heck out of me. So I went to a salon and had it waxed. My face felt AMAZING and I loved the way my face felt. Problem is i don't want to spend that amount of money every few weeks. DH didn't really notice, but *I* noticed and it made me feel better not to have those little white hairs on my face (with a few random not-as-light hairs thrown in the mix, ugh)
I tried an at-home wax strip kit but it sucked. So one day I grabbed my razor (Gillette venus embrace) and tried it. I felt SO weird and embarrassed doing it, lol. And I didn't tell DH. But was really happy with the results. Not quite the same smoothness as when I've had it done at the salon, but still nice. I (still) feel like a weirdo doing it, but I'd rather feel like a weirdo for those few-second swipes with the razor than feel like I've got a fuzzy face.
I don't do the upper lip area with a razor though. Never will. I'd be mortified if it gave it that 5'oclock shadow look, lol. So I use a cream and tweezers. Or I get my upper lip waxed, because it's cheaper than getting a whole face wax.

Iv been shaving my whole face twice a week for years. I grow a lot of fuzz it's not dark or coarse but it is definetly visible in the sun. Shaving works great, the hair has never grown back darker. Also shaving is an amazing exfoliator. I read once that the reason men age better than women is because they shave which causes regular exfoliation. I can't say if that's true, but I know my skin benefits from it.
