We've been plastering the area with flyers and they keep getting removed.
This morning, stbx's girlfriend sat in her car and watched one of the flyers. Some big dude in his 40s-ish pulled up in a black Acura, got a city vest out of his trunk and started taking the flyers down. So the GF confronted him and asked what he was doing. He started going off about it being illegal to post flyers, blah blah blah. So she asked for his city ID badge/info. And he got PISSED. Refused to show her anything and started yelling about fines, etc. Unfortunately, she was so shaken up by the confrontation that she forgot to get his plate number.
So Ex called the cops and Code Enforcement, who confirmed that this guy was DEFINITELY not legit. All city workers, including code enforcement, would a) be driving a city vehicle, b) would have ID clipped right to the front of their vests, and c) would only show up if someone CALLED IN the violation. And even if someone has called it in, no one would have responded as fast as this guy was there.
So we're trying to figure out how to legitimately catch this guy. Hopefully the cops will help.
On the plus side, we're both more sure than ever that she is still alive and nearby.
Wow, this dude is really making an effort. How about going and getting your own fucking dog and giving this dog back to the people who are obviously looking for him and love him.
So do you think his guy took H? Jesus. What an asshole. On the bright side, if he did, it sounds like he's well-taken care of for that guy to go through all the trouble. Thinking good thoughts for you <3
This is really strange; he has a vest? How many dogs is this guy stealing? Is there a lost dog black market? Shit, I hope you get your puppy back soon.

People are such assholes. There was just a story in our paper this week about someone who stole a dog and drove to Denver with it for 5 months. The owners finally got the dog back.
The good news is, your dog is most likely alive and (hopefully) well. I hope the police/you guys can catch this fucker and get your pup back.
WTF does this guy care if you post flyers??? I hope they catch him!!
Unless he has the dog. Think about it, you find a dog and take it in and lay dibs on it....finders keepers. You notice that someone is plastering flyers everywhere for that animal, you're going to be a piece of shit and try to get rid of them. I would set up a sting and put up flyers all around that area where that confrontation happened and hope that car drives up again. Get the license and record him on your phone or video camera.
I don't like flyers left on poles because they look crappy after awhile....but if they're for a missing pet, then I have issue with them.

Very likely. Or dog fighting.
Code enforcement told Ex that those vest are super easy to steal. They end up in piles during/after work shifts. If someone knows they're there, he could snag one really easily.
BUT she also said that real city workers will ALWAYS ALWAYS have their IDs prominently displayed/clipped to their vests. And requests for ID would not be met with indignation and threats.

Put the flyer in the same spot and fit and wait for him. Im guessing he will be back. Get a license plate but don't confront him on your own. Dude sounds crazy.
Also, berbles, have you thought of hiring someone to track Hurley? That was going to be my next step when my dog was lost. Thankfully, I found him though.
I have thought about it. I will talk to Ex about having his dad pay for one; especially since we have concrete info to go off of now (i.e., car make/model, age/height/weight of the guy, etc).
I was thinking this too. I wouldn't do it alone, but I would at least get his address. Maybe he'll leave Hurley outside in the yard, or you could knock on the door about something else and see if Hurley comes running to the door.
I know this is probably a little dangerous, but it would be worth a try for me.
