Can you be more specific? Do you think she meant that the in-store designers are kind of worthless? And what is your take? You agree? I've gotten great help from in-store designers, but they left out a LOT of important stuff that REALLY would have helped. And they totally could have upsold me, and saved me some headaches. In the end, I learned my designer flat-out lied to me to conceal his own stupid mistake. Had to go over his head to correct it.
I agree with her but I'm also an Architect so take that with a grain of salt. It's like building without an Architect..yeah, just a contractor or designing it yourself is cheaper but things are lost including cost saving things Architects do & there are a lot of disproportional & fug houses out there. .
MH and I had a similar discussion about this last night based on a comment my boss made (that interior design is a luxury service--note, there is a link about this too at the end of the blog).
I think many people, like my boss, make the mistake of thinking a designer is a luxury service and don't seem to understand that hiring professional help, and not depending on Joe Schmoe the contractor or the in-store design service, can/will help bring vision to reality and help a homeowner make smart decisions. Depending on someone who doesn't know all the specs going in, hasn't taken time to get to know the client, etc can most definitely result in expensive mistakes as the author states.
I read this post this morning too and I thought it was great advice - especially the part about not making future expensive mistakes because you don't want to correct previous expensive mistakes. I mainly thought it was about trusting your instincts about your own style and not being shy about speaking up when contractors are doing dumb things (like drilling holes that were too close together through her silestone)
I think this is a great article and very sound advice. I'm really grateful for Pinterest because when it came time to do our kitchen I knew what look I liked. I got so much unsolicited advice while doing my kitchen, it made me second guess myself at times. Fortunately, I'm pretty stubborn. =)
