The only time I placed in my age group (a fluke apparently, as I'm very much a middle of the pack-er) the prizes were from a local jewelry store. We didn't stick around to see the results (since we never win) and I couldn't claim my prize. FAIL.
We're all adults who are well aware of the way the world works, so it's not like the participants are in danger of being taught to always expect to win. What's the harm in a little added fun for people who aren't that fast?

That isn't the definition of the "Trophy Generation," or building off my comment of "Everyone wins a Trophy."
The Trophy Generation is defined by the concept that mere participation is enough to win an award.
But in this case, participation isn't enough to win an award. Not everyone gets something. (Well, unless they give finisher medals.)
They just added a couple of fun and humorous categories in which people have a chance to win a little prize. What's the harm in that? There are still clear winners, and they make it clear that the other awards are for middle or last place. It's funny.
Are you one of those people who believes that only elites and very serious competitors deserve to even participate in races?

I get the humor. I'm a funny and witty person. I got it.
I also think it's pretty clearly a play on the concept that everyone wins a trophy.
I don't recall giving my opinion on the matter any place... Except I really don't believe in rewarding last place.
I think that's a pretty big assumption to make about me lol.

At one of the local races here, last place gets a stuffed penguin. It's not a big enough deal to actually try to come in last place, but I think it takes some of the blow out of coming in last.
