H and I are at odds about what color to get for our new family room carpet. A beige shade works well with our wall color and decor, but H thinks we should get something in the gray family because it will hide stains better.
The new carpet is 100% nylon and guaranteed to be stain-free for life, and has a plastic backing to keep stains from seeping down into the pad. Our original carpet that we got 9 years ago was "stain-free" and it turned out to be anything but. The salesman said that carpets are actually better now than they were even five years ago, and that stain-free really means stain-free these days.

We installed a stainfree nylon 4 years ago in our basement. Since then we've had a frozen pipe burst while we were not home and flood it. THEN we had a in-home humidifier malfunction and flood it again. Thank god for this carpet. Our contractor said they normally have to replace the carpet and pad after flooding, but our was totally fine after it dried. 2 floods, 2 kids, 2 big dogs and it still looks exactly how it did when it was new.
Ours is a beige frieze with darker speckles in it. I'm so glad we spent the extra money on it. It's paid for itself big time.
