Has anyone successfully done this using one of those kits you can purchase? Our cupboards are a lighter wood color, and I would love to go a dark brown. Our counter-tops are a green color, but I would like something in a brownish color. I'm too cheap to get everything replaced, are the kits a horrible idea?
Not cabinets but my mom painted a veneered wood desk without much prep by using a bonded primer. She had to do about 3 coats of each color but it turned out nicely.
Also, we've painted our counter tops (parents and I) in an older home with acrylic paint and an epoxy top coat. We made it look like high end granite.
I bought a primer for the cabinets, based on what the guy at HD recommended and then just used the paint type that I wanted. It was very easy and not very expensive.

We had friends who did their counters with one of the kits that makes it look more like granite. It didn't look terrible but it wasn't amazing either. They had a smaller kitchen so if it had been me I probably would have waited a little longer and done a solid surface. I have also seen cabinets painted white but do you want to paint or stain them to a darker color? I would imagine if you want them to still look like wood it is going to depend on the type of material the cabinet is if it can be done. Definitely ask on the H&G board I don't post over there but I lurk like crazy. LOL
My friend did this and it looks nice....definitely doesn't pass for real granite or anything (obviously), but they were on a budget and it looks better than what they had.
They used a kit, just not sure which.
My mom did hers as well while saving up for real granite. I thought it looked fine as an interim.
We did our kitchen cabinets recently with the Rustoleum kit. The previous owners of our house had painted the cabinets white, but very poorly. The kitchen looks so much better now, I think this would be a good solution in your situation!
