I'm not sure if this would work (would probably depend on what type of material the rug is), but maybe you could take the rug outside, lay it out on your driveway, mix water and bleach together in a bucket, and then pour the water and bleach over the rug. Then, let it sit for a while, thoroughly hose it off, and then hang it to dry completely.

Do you have other rugs/carpets that could use a cleaning? If so, call a rug cleaning company - they will do a MUCH better job than you can do renting a shampooer.

It depends on the weave. We have white carpet, and we tried to use a Hoover carpet cleaning vacuum, but it seemed like it never fully got the dirt out. So we've hired cleaners about once per year to clean it. We also don't have kids, and don't wear shoes in the house, but it just ends up looking dingy after awhile.
You could also try renting a Rug Doctor. I believe Bissel also makes smaller carpet cleaning vacuums, like handheld ones. I might try something like that first.
We just bought this Hoover Max Extract all Terrain and I love it. It also works on hard floors. We used it this weekend it was gross how much stuff it got out of the carpet and the carpets look great.

If you look underneath a rental shampooer you will never consider renting one again.
I am a fellow cleaning lover (probably the most cleaning obsessed person on the board). Get a steam cleaner of your own, the kind with a heated tank. I have a hoover Max Extract Dual V wide path carpet cleaner and I love it.
