So. It's possible that I have osteopenia. I have to get a bone density test done. I am terrified b/c either outcome isn't good.
A) It is osteopenia and the only treatments available aren't recommended for women looking to get pregnant (doesn't give a time frame)
B) It isn't osteopenia, and the doc says we have to go back to biomechanics which he doesn't think would cause 3 SFX's in 1 year- esp seeing that he oversaw my most recent return to running.
Oh, tuggy, I'm so sorry. I really hope it's B and something was just overlooked.
I don't know what the treatments are but FWIW, I'll be considered a high-risk pregnancy since I'm on Class C meds, and it's awesome how my specialists can work through stuff like this. I wouldn't get too worked up about it until you know what you are dealing with and have had good thorough discussions with specialists about all your options.
Thanks @aswartz ! I hope so too, trying really hard not to just throw my hands up right now. I'm just trying to look at the positive that I will get more use out of my bike (sadlebred)
Thanks for all the love yall! On the flip side- I won't have to worry about fitting my runs in while I am in Key West next week, lol. Beach yoga, here I come!

i have it. it sucks. I can't take anything because I'm pre-menapausal. I'm on high calcium and vitamin d. I do need another bone scan, but hopefully I don't jinx myself, but I have broken a bone in a year ;-) so maybe all the vitamin D is working.
I had to stop running (stress fractures). I still walk but for cardio I do spin and walk.
My ob/gyn thinks it was caused by essentially nursing for 5 years straight when is basically like inducing menopause and that hopefully i can rebuild bone now that I've stopped nursing.

I am so sorry to hear that you have had to deal with this. I have had 3 SFX in 1 year, one bizarre one in my heel bone (and I'm not even a heel striker!). If it turns out that this is what I have my podiatrist wants to send me to some awesome specialist. However, I'm super nervous about any treatment b/c I have heard that it can cause birth defects and I'd like to start TTC sometime in the future.
When my bone density scan came back that I had osteopenia I was sent to an endocrinologist. She ruled out that I didn't have celiac a and a bunch if other potential reasons for being osteopenia so young.
And ditto septimus: rule out any nutrient deficiencies or conditions/medications that might result in nutrient malabsorption. PPI's/H2 blockers for acid reflux come to mind first.
You can google Mira Calton; she was dealing with osteoporosis at a young age.
Don't despair! Likely you can find a solution that doesn't leave you reliant on pharmaceuticals with undesirable side effects. If your health care providers don't present any appealing plans of action look up someone who uses a functional medicine approach (see www.functionalmedicine.org/ ). It's tricky but would be worth the effort to find someone good.
Thank you so much! Do you have osteopenia? I'm going in an hour for my bone density scan.
I have questions about medicine's I've been on/the fact that although my blood test showed negative for celiac, I have all of the symptoms and get relief when I eat GF. So frustrated at this point. It hurts to walk.

I don't but my MIL has severe osteoporosis (had several surgeries as a result - to fuse vertebrae, knee and hip replacement - she's bionic). Although she's almost 90 and still hobbling around, I don't think the conventional course of treatment served her very well. Her quality of life has been pretty crappy for the past 20 yrs.
Both she and my husband have acid reflux and husband got off of H2 blockers by cutting out added sugars, starches, dairy and most grains (so he's eating GF). They share some other health problems so I wonder if there's a predisposition not to process vit. D or other nutrients properly that contribute to that.
Hey Emily, I know this is random but I was having pretty severe GI problems and started looking into FOD-MAP. It turns out that I am intolerant to not the GLUTEN (protein) in wheat/flours but instead, the carbohydrate part of wheat (frucans). Eating GF helps as a lot of GF breads don't contain any wheat at all, but some only have the gluten (protein) removed and still irritate me. If you tested negative for Celiac's, this may be something to consider. Also, a lot of Paleo supporters would say that humans were never meant to eat wheat at all, regardless of the outcome of your tests. I would venture to say the same thing about dairy - no other animal on the planet eats milk as an adult, especially from an entirely different species.
'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather, to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming 'Woohoo! What a ride!' So every day is a holiday and every meal a feast."

Thanks so much naldridge ! I'll definitely check it out- does FOD-MAP also cause vitamin and mineral absorption problems?
You ladies are always such a wonderful source of information- THANK YOU!
FODMAP is an elimination diet and each part of the acronym stands for a different irritant ( Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols*).
I also have a really great app that let's me check a billion different ingredients based on my irritants. Once you know what bothers you, you can set the app to only search for specific things.
I think the app is just called FODMAP and it wasn't free but has definitely been worth it.
