After work today I went on a short-ish walk with a coworker. As we were nearing an intersection, we hear someone crying. This guy is standing on top of the bus stop bench crying/wailing/sounding like Chewbaca, then starts saying "he's dead" while carrying on. There was a man on the bench next to him who had been sitting, but was slumped to one side.
We cross the street, talk over what we should do, and I call the non-emergency police line. Then I have to call a different one, then another one. Then I was on hold forever. We would look to see if they were still there, and they were. The one guy would quiet down when people weren't nearby, and the dead guy and his bike didn't move.
We continue our walk while I'm on hold and when we get back to the intersection, both the wailing guy and the dead guy are gone, as is the bike.
Moral of the story: may be time to prepare for zombie apocalypse?
Really, we just thought the while thing was bizarre and, in retrospect, pretty damn funny.
I was thinking social psych experiment, too, after realizing they probably weren't trying to abduct women on their bike. I didn't get through to the police. I was on hold for at least 15 minutes and was still waiting for a dispatcher to answer when I saw the guys were gone. Guess that's what happens when you call the non-emergency number instead of 911.
This is highly likely, given how busy the non-emergency number was. And my experiences living here. There are lots of transients who do weird things, so I'm always cautious.
