Last night DH and I took our girls (7 and 4) to see Despicable Me 2 at a local theater (not AMC or Regal). During the previews, right between Turbo and Cloudy with a chance of meatballs was one for Hunger Games. My 3 year old was terrified. She covered her Hello Kitty's eyes and started crying saying she didn't want them to burn down our house. I know there's probably not much that management can do, but would you call them? If I had known that's what would be shown I could have taken her to the bathroom during the previews.
Eta: oops, thought I was posting this on ML and now I can't delete
I'm not sure how it is now with digital formats, but when I worked at a theatre with the physical film strips, the trailers had to be cut and attached to the rest of the film in the theatre, the movies didn't come with trailers already attached.
So, even if corporate had a "suggested" trailer schedule available, a person at the individual theatre still looked at each trailer that was used for a given movie.

I worked at a movie theater for years in HS & college. Loved it. Probably my favorite job ever.
And, yeah, call and let them know, because that's not right.
I understand they might not have much control over what's shown, but if they at least had a disclaimer at the ticket office, I could have taken her out to the hallway during previews
I don't remember what movie it was a preview for, but the AMC theater I took my DD4 to see DM2 at showed a preview that I thought was inappropriate also. I'm tending to think it's something you need to hit at a higher up level than the actual theater itself.
Despicable Me 2 is rated PG, not G. Hunger games is PG-13 - people seeing a PG movie are going to be targets for the rating above and below. I'm fine with the theater's choice.
If the movie you saw were rated G I think you'd have a leg to stand on.

I disagree. Pretty much every movie, kids movies included, are rated PG now. It just means parental guidance, not that the movies are inappropriate for kids. I would not expect a movie with PG 13 material to be shown at a PG movie.
Oh lord. I would have been angry. That's not appropriate for the younger crowd. My five year old probably would have covered her stuffed animal's eyes as well. I would call and complain. At least they can make sure it doesn't happen again.
PG-13 means that it may be inappropriate for kids under 13. Obviously, 13 and over is not going to be the target demographic for a child's movie.

Yes, but all trailers are rated "G" for all intents and purposes. Like, they are supposed to be marginally appropriate for all audiences.

A parent has a right to complain.
But the target audience for Hunger Games are the very mothers who are escorting their children to see Despicable Me. It was a good marketing move.

Not really. Because if my kid is screaming and/or crying and is frightened, I'm not going to be paying attention to a preview. I'm going to be comforting said screaming and/or crying child.

Perhaps they wouldn't reach you with the trailer if your kid freaked out, but they would have reached a substantial group of moms whose kids aren't bothered by such things.
It's funny, DH and I went to see The Way, Way Back this afternoon and I noticed that one of the trailers had a green screen tag on it that identified it as approved to be shown with this feature by the MPAA. First time I ever noticed that.

I would call. My kids would have been terrified! That's a terrible choice of a trailer for before a kids movie. While some kids might not be scared I would think many many kids would be!
