Ours is a heavy duty plastic-coated string (I know that's probably a terrible description) that attaches to our basketball net post on one end and the back porch post on the other. I can take it down when I'm not using it. The length is very long, so I need a stick to keep it from sagging in the middle.
I only use it when the weather is not. So spring and fall mostly. I might use it today since it's not too hot.
We don't have a clothes line. We just use drying racks and put them outside. I always loved the serious ones on pulley systems I always saw on Amish homes when I lived near Amish country.
I always wanted one. We had one strung between two poles growing up, it was actually in the easement behind the back wall, so it wasn't visible to anyone but the garbage man.
We never got around to putting one in at our old hose....we just used portable drying racks outside.
This definitely is not the house for it. My clothes would be full of stuff that falls from the trees, and would be dirtier than they were before they went into the washer.
I had considered putting a retractable one in the atrium off the bathrooms, where there are fewer tree issues, but I honestly don't know if anything would even dry here.

My parents had one at their house while us kids where growing up. Big wood posts with a board across the top making a T. It had four plastic coated strings across. Old farm house, no need to take down the line. One time tourist stopped to take pictures of the clothes on the line blowing around in the breeze. My Mom about died of embarrassment.
This will not be terribly helpful, but I'll throw it out there anyway. We have this line hanging in our basement. I'd like to get another one to attach to the house and connect to a pole in the backyard because I like that it is retractable and can just stay in place when not in use.

We've got one in the backyard, one end is attached to the house, next to the deck, and the other end is attached to the telephone pole behind our yard. It's up all year round. I keep meaning to use it more often but never remember it when I'm actually doing laundry. It was pretty useful last summer before we bought a dryer though.
Yes. I have one. Love it. Two poles one each end. They're actually from a telephone pile FIL cut down. It's not going anywhere..lol. It's located on my MILS side yard which is my front lawn in a roundabout way. Nope. That bad boy is coming down...like...umm..never..ha. See above. In the summer. Almost everyday to every other. Unless it's super dry so it's dusty. I feel like my clothes don't stay too clean that way. Sometimes I get lazy though and it goes in the dryer. I like do laundry about 10pm. I always use the clothesline if my AC is on for sure. I use it spring to fall. My MIL will still line dry in January.
We had one growing up. So did my grandparents. We had the kind others mentioned with two poles & four lines & it never came down. I don't have room for one now, but just love sleeping on sheets dried on the line. I also think linens blowing in the breeze with the sun shining through is one of my favorite nostalgic summer memories. Just the thought of it is relaxing to me for some reason...

We did growing up. Two T shape poles probably 30-40ft apart, with multiple poles in between to prevent sagging. Plastic coated line, it stayed up year round. Clothespins went in a bag that hooked to the line, and you just slid it over as you moved down the line.
We don't line dry. It's not very good for our seasonal allergies.
didn't growing up, but my grandma did. we have a line here and I use it all the time. I do like to run the clothes through the dryer partway though to get the dog hair off. If I don't, I feel like it just piles up on the clothes and towels especially. our line connects from the house to the garage. I take it down if we're using the back yard or in the winter.

I want to, but here you have hot, dry, and dusty or wet and rainy with very little middle ground. So it just doesn't seem too practical. Nothing outside here stays clean very long.
I have a removable umbrella style clothes line that fits into a ground receptacle. It think it cost under $40 at Mesnards. Put it up and take it down after each use (gets stored in our storage building in the backyard). I use it regularly for most of my laundry (but not all) from spring to fall weather permitting.
In my previous house I had permanent clothes lines and would restring them every year in the spring with new clothes line.
It's one with a central pole. It's in our backyard on the opposite end from our back door. We just got it this spring. I'm going to see how often we use it this winter (I will CD this baby and possibly use it for stain removal). I use it several times per week - for DHs 2 loads of work clothes and usually one of our two loads of clothes.
We do hangers and drying racks in the basement. We've always had wooded backyards so I have a feeling I'd need to re-wash half the stuff that's outside due to things falling from the trees (and I have no desire to shake ticks and japanese beetles out of clean laundry!)
