I am finally trying the coconut oil in my hair. I went and ran c25k this morning, and then went with DH to the gym to do some strength training.
I came home, brushed out my hair, and started applying coconut oil to it (I'm using TJ's organic virgin coconut oil). Since it was already a liquid, I just put my fingers in the jar and applied it all over my hair (roots to ends) until I felt it was saturated just enough. I blasted my hair with a hair dryer and I felt like the oil penetrated even more into my hair shaft. I thought it was going to be a drippy mess, but I just put my hair in a high bun on top of my head and there isn't any dripping (though I do recommend putting on an old t-shirt). I have a shower cap on but not even sure if this is necessary (not so much for the hair since it's not drippy, but since I've heard that putting on a shower cap will help keep the heat in my hairshaft and thus moisturize my hair even moreso).
I plan on keeping this on all afternoon (started @ 4pm) and will shower around 9/10pm tonight.
Keeping fingers crossed my hair feels better tomorrow!
I grew up with coconut oil in my hair. LOL! Its very popular in eastern Asia. I don't use it as much in the states and smelling that oil would make me want to eat coconut! I love everything coconut! Dang it, I want coconut now.
Oh btw, I just showered and noticed I use the Suave smoothing Keratin treatment for frizz control. LOL!

Thanks house. I use the first Suave product you PIPed. Sometimes it really leaves my hair greasy/residue-ish, but other times it is fine. I think I just need to rinse it out better?
Do you use the Humectant Moisture shamppo & cond? How does it compare to the first one you PIPed?
Yes I do feel like the one we are using now doesn't "clean" very well. I think I rinse pretty well. I am switching to the humectant one. I don't use them yet. I think I will buy them soon and use that more often and use the smoothing ones on weekends as a treatment.
HouseGeek, which keratin treatment do you recommend? And also for daily moisture?
For keratin, i love joico kpak. It is expensive, but you dont need it daily and you only need a tiny bit so it goes far ( and it smells like bananas!!). For moisture, it Depends on where you live and what your hair type is.
We first used coconut oil on DD's hair when she came home from school with lice. It was the only thing that got rid of them and her hair was so soft after the treatment.
Hmmm my coconut oil doesn't smell like anything. Wonder if I'm using the wrong one?
I've heard the processed/refined kind doesn't have a scent so maybe that's what you have?
The least processed the better (or so I've read). I buy Nutiva brand organic unrefined extra virgin and love it for hair, skin, cooking, etc.
ILikeSloths- You use it on your skin? Where so and when?
HouseGeek- Just to get your opinion... I am Asian so I have thick black hair, dry (apparently, that's what my hair dresser told me), and slightly wavy but mainly straight. What would you recommend? Preferably a drugstore brand, but if you don't recommend any, I'd like to hear your salon brand suggestions
Theycalledherkate- Mine is TJ's organic virgin coconut oil. It smells divine. Maybe yours is refined? You want it to be the least refined as possibly (more quality pure coconut oil). Most people on this board recommended Nutiva brand's organic extra virgin coconut oil

I use it as an all natural moisturizer on my whole body. I apply it before going to bed since it's oily and this gives it time to soak in. When I wake up my skin is soft... love it.
I only do this a couple times per week or so just because I'm lazy and slack off, but I've heard of some people using it daily and having great results. It's even better if you can use it right after taking a shower but I usually shower in the mornings and don't have time to let it soak in.
I usually avoid applying it to my face just because I use Retin-A in the evenings. I've also heard that some people have issues with it clogging their facial pores, although this hasn't been my experience the times I've done it.

Thank you! Maybe it is refined, I got it at whole foods. Where can I get the Nutiva?
I buy mine on Amazon. They have several different sizes but I buy the large 54 ounce tub because it's cheapest and I use it so often. I'm obsessed with coconut oil!

They calledherkate- I've seen it on Amazon.
Theycalledherkate & ILikeSloths- How often do you use coconut oil in your hair, and how long do you keep it in for? Have you seen/felt a difference in your hair?
I've had mine in since 4pm and it smeels so good, I just want to eat something coconut-y. I also feel gross from working out and not being able to shower. Is 2 hours in the hair enough, or should I leave it in longer? It's been in this shower cap and I feel like I look like an alien
Cran, Im not familiar with many drug store brands, but I'd recommend grund Tiger for shampoo, or joico in general I find really nice. It also depends on if you live where it's humid or dry, when I was in Ca I could use a much more moisturizing shampoo/ conditioner than now on the east coast.
Houseof999, there's a long list of reasons, but basically a good shampoo shouldn't really sud and bubble because that means there are harsh( and cheap) detergents which aren't healthy for your hair. And frankly, you do get what you pay for with the cheaper brands. Salon brands you actually need less per use, and they work better and are healthier for your hair and scalp, so the price tends to balance out. Hair just isn't a place I cheap out on hah.
Also, I would suggest using a sulfate free shampoo vs what you are using. I think I recommended the Nature's Gate stuff I use to you, right?
Its this:
They have other formulas, but I like this one for my dry, frizzy, color-treated hair. Plus it smells awesome.
Its not as cheap as the Suave, but also not nearly as expensive as the salon stuff. I've used SO MANY expensive salon brands, and my hair looks SO much better now than it ever had when using salon brands.
That said, for conditioner, I DO actually use Suave! Aside from deep conditioning with the coconut oil, I use Suave Naturals coconut conditioner (I love the smell, lol). It is free of silicones which can coat the hair leaving residue and eventually seal out moisture, which results in your hair feeling like straw and becoming frizzy.
Even if you don't have curly hair, the info in the "warnings" section of this wiki regarding sulfates and silicones has been really helpful for me when selecting products:

cransplash, according to totalbeauty.com Herbal essences Hydralicious Reconditioning shampoo is #1 of the best 15 drugstore brands. Its only 3.99 so I think it wil worth trying. One reviewer said the shampoo was good but it was the conditioner that really had an impact on her hair.

Bimbi- Thanks for the rec!
House0f99- I'll look into the Herbal Essences conditioner as well.
