I have way too much makeup. Way too much. I sorted through earlier this year and still had too much. I just sorted through again today, and I still have so much. I am proud of how much I've been able to get rid of, though.
I think I have a problem. I keep trying to pare down, but it's HARD! I will keep getting rid of makeup a little at a time, trying to get a better makeup routine and simplifying. It does feel good to get rid of the clutter, that's the feeling I'm going to hang onto.
cuddlyevil, I used to suck at blush and so I avoided wearing it for a long time. I now have a good technique down that I learned from a youtube video by gossmakeupartist (I think). I'll find it and post the link.
BTW, captainmel, one of the ways I learned to do eye shadow was to get my makeup done and pay attention to what it felt like when they were applying eye makeup, what the motions of the brushes felt, like on my lid, and then see what the resulting look was as well as what brushes they'd used. With eye makeup especially, practice is so important. Whenever I want to do a specific kind of look for an event, I practice in advance until I have it down.

I never wear eye shadow. Ever. I think I have like two basic pallets that I picked out when I was like 15.
I have some pretty nice brushes that came in a set so I think I am covered there. Is there a basic set of shadow that I should own/play with? I have weirdly oily lids too. Should I invest in the Urban Decay primer everyone is obsessed with or is there a less expensive version that would be nice to try out?
Where would you reccomend getting your makeup done? Sephora/Ulta/MAC?

I don't think there's one basic shadow set that will work for everyone. I do think a.good place to start experimenting is drugstore makeup, since it costs less. I've heard good things about Wet N Wild (their big palettes and trios), but when I've looked I've seen more shimmer than I wanted. Starting out, you really only need about 3 - 4 shadow colors: lid, crease, brow bone/inner corner, & contour (outer edge of eye).
For trying out makeup, check to see if places have minimum purchases required if you get your makeup done there, or if there's a charge for the appointment and whether or not that can be used as credit towards product. I used to just go into department stores, express my interest, and let them put makeup on me.
MAC tends to charge, if I remember correctly. That may only be in their pro stores, though, and not at the counters in department stores. If you want a classic everyday look, I would recommend Sephora because they have brands like Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier, which I think of as being about enhancing natural beauty more so than some other lines that seem to be more adventurous. Oh, Ulta is good if you want to get any NYX products. I do like NYX too.
My newly culled eyeshadow collection is mostly Chanel, MAC, Bobbi Brown, and Stila with some Laura Mercier, Clinique, and Make Up For Ever. There are lots of awesome shadows out there.

Thank you so much tiramisu! I will keep you updated on my attempts. I was eying a big physicians formula palette a couple of weeks ago but I resisted. I will try out some of these tutorials soon!
I need to go to Ulta for their liter shampoo sale so maybe I will call them and figure out their policy on makeup.
Also, the way I apply blush starts with picking up some product on my brush, then tapping to remove excess product, then pressing the brush onto the top of the blush container or another surface, then tap again. I do short, diagonally downward strokes moving from the outside top of my cheekbones down towards my nose. I don't go all the way to the apple of my cheek or beyond. Then I blend with my powder brush to make sure there are no harsh edges. Also, the way I get product on my brush ensures that I won't have too much product. Hopefully. I've definitely worn too much blush many times.
Muddled, I do too. Or I have, but I'm trying to dig myself out of it. I've started feeling controlled by the stuff, which is why I'm decluttering a little at a time.
I also have too much nail polish. But in HS my friends called me the lipstick queen, and makeup is still my primary weakness. I'm really good at helping others create streamlined makeup routines, but I used to want to always look different day-to-day when I transitioned from selling makeup and skincare to working in a corporate environment. Now it's time to accept that blue eyeshadow and sparkly stuff is not right for my phase of life.
I have a shit ton of makeup too. It's a good pick me up. I need to get some containers to organize it all because I forget what I do and don't have. I may have 10 different taupe eye shadows, which is embarrassing. I usually just wear a wash of color on my lids and then highlight my brow bones /inner corners.
Essiebutton has some great tutorials on her YouTube channel. I usually just watch her for brand/color recommendations. Her bad influence has resulted in my terrible Revlon lip butter addiction.

This thread makes me feel a little frumpy...
I didn't feel like doing make up today, so I just did my foundation and used bronzer for blush and eyeshadow, added a little eyeliner, mascara, and chapstick.
I'm having lunch with a friend today too. Now I feel really bad... tiramisu can you just jaunt on up here and make me look human, please??

That doesn't sound frumpy at all! But I might be biased because I'm wearing tinted moisturizer, corrector, powder, a hint of blush, eyeliner, and mascara.
Although I wish we lived close enough that I could come do your makeup. And help you pack, and maybe slip some makeup into one of your boxes.

LOL! It probably didn't help that I was wearing a shirt that has become a little bit too big over the last few weeks... I didn't realize it was that large until I got to work and had to keep pulling the neck back to keep my boobs from falling out...
