I snagged an awesome shelf from my neighbor who recently passed. It is old, shabby and I just love it. Of course, the paint is lead :/ I used one of those testers fom Lowes. I'd love to keep it, so how can I remedy the situation? I would really love to keep the paint as it was and read that sealing the paint would be enough. What would I even seal it with? If seling is bad, any other recommendtions? Thanks, guys!!

We were in a similar situation last year and got rid of the piece of furniture because I was concerned about DD's exposure. I wouldn't take the risk with young children in the house, even if it was sealed.
As long as it's not chipping or eating things off it or chewing on the actual shelf, it's fine. The risks of lead are associated with ingestion.
It is chipping. No. They wouldn't even be touching it bc it would be hung on the wall where they couldn't even touch it. I was hoping sealing it would keep what is there in place. I know I could sell it, bc people on my yard sale sites love these things lead and all. Here are some pics and keep in mind, it is old, from a business in our hometown and I love shabby!
We used this on all our windows which had terrible chipped and cracked paint. It's super sticky, which is kind of the point: it gloms on and never comes off. Unlike most latex paints, this will not be coming off your skin, so be careful and lay down lots of protection. It cures harder with UV exposure, so you'll want to be able to lay your shelf outside in the sun for a while after painting.

is it actually chipping though? My bedside table looks alligatored just like that but has never had any chips. Sealing never even occurred to me. If you are concerned, I would use polyacrylic over it. NOT polyurethane (that yellows).
