I stayed at Club Quarters Midtown a few weeks ago; it's on West 45th Street. Rooms are nice, but small. That didn't matter at all, considering we didn't spend a lot if time in our room. I thought the location was great. It was close to Times Square, Rockafellar Center, the subway, etc. I'm not sure where Pier 92 and 60 are, so Club Quarters might be way out of the way for you.
There was a Holiday Inn Express right across the street as well, which offered a free continental hot breakfast, if that's something important to you. DH and I said it would've been nice to have, but it wasn't a deal breaker for us.
WE were in NYC last weekend and I got a room thru Priceline name your own price. You can pick the star levels you want ( I always say I want 4 or above) and the area you want to stay. I paid 170.00 for our room at The Jewel facing Rockefeller Center. It was decent and very clean. I'd stay there again. The location was wonderful.
Do you think you want to stay in Midtown? Or nearer to Chelsea? As much as Times Square annoys me, it might be a good in-between for you. I've stayed at the Westin and W there and they're both nice. There's about a million hotels around there, though.
Agree that Hotwire/Priceline can be a good way to go too. It can be a bit risky though - I've gotten 5 star hotels and flu boutique hotels that way, but have also been disappointed with old fleabag places, too.

I'm honestly looking at all areas. I know it's a busy weekend there, but I'd hate to spend $250 - $300 for a basic place to sleep. We'd like to keep our walks from hotels to the venues to less than 2 miles. We average walking 10 - 12 miles a weekend in Chicago and figure we can handle it there.
You can likely use Priceline and pinpoint the hotel class. We stayed at Four Points in Soho last time, and it was great, and quiet, and close to restaurants. And it's close to subways. The room is small, though.
