Sorry to call you out over here, but I'm still not super comfortable over at MMM and feel cozier here. I just wanted to say how excited I was to see your interest in cloth over there! I was kind of a little tiny bit obsessive in my cloth diapering years (maybe a little more than a tiny bit obsessive). If you ever want to chat cloth, I kind of love to talk diapers. :-)
thanks! i'm so excited to use cloth diapers... kind of freakishly so considering it's glorified underwear, haha. i have several friends who have cloth diapered, but they all use a diaper service so my questions as to brands and such is totally lost on them.
we're cloth diapering as much for the cost benefit as for the eco benefits so i really don't want to go crazy and spend a ton building my stash, but i also don't want to cheap out and get crappy diapers. after reading the thread on MMM i spent a ton of time on the Kawaii site looking at their diapers. do you have an experience with them? the price is excellent and they seem as good as anything else i'm researching.
i'm willing to put up with a little bit of inconvenience to save money so i don't need a perfect all-in-one, i am very handy at sewing straight lines so i could save some money by making my own inserts if needed, and i have a year mat leave so i have lots of time to figure this out without other distractions.
what are your favorite brands or styles? i need all the information i can get :-)
I had never heard of Kawaii, but it's been 2 years since I bought any diapers. Woah, those are some really inexpensive cloth diapers. How can they be so cheap? Geeze.
My Jackson's stash consisted of a bunch of prefolds, a million fitted diapers, and about 12 AIOs for most of my diapering years. Favorite prefolds were Thirstess colors. Something about that cotton they used was just gorgeous. BUt they are impossible to find and the green mountain ones are really lovely too. I also really really loved bamboo velour prefolds. Those things were ridiculously soft and stretched to high heaven, so I could get a nice tight fit. Mostly though, I had fitted diapers. I bought mostly from WAHM diaper makers, and had several brands that I was really in love with. For AIOs, I started with bumgenius but the fit of BG wasn't right for my super skinny kids. I had and liked some brands that offered embroidery (Fussy were the best at embroidery, but I only ever had a few of those), but I really fell in love with GroVia when Kate was in cloth - she wore those for probably 75% of her days in cloth (she was only in cloth her first year).
With the exception of the prefolds, I got to know everyone who made diapers for my kids - including the AIOs. And that was a big part of my cloth diapering love affair. I loved supporting women-owned businesses here in the US and in Canada, I love the friendships I made and I really loved being able to customize and get exactly what I wanted.
I encourage you to experiment and find what works for you! Don't limit yourself to AIOs, I loved how well fitted diapers let my kids' bums breathe and lots of times they ran around the house in fitteds with no covers. There's a big second-hand market out there and it's an inexpensive way to try out different brands.
The most important thing is getting a nice fit and the right absorbency for your specific kid- some brands that work well for some may not work well for you. It all depends on who pops out of you!
finding something for a skinny baby is one of my bigger concerns. h and i were both slim, petit babies and so i'm sort of expecting that trend to continue.
i've been checking our local classifieds and the pickings there are really slim for used cloth. i'm hoping i'll connect with some mom groups that might have better second hand offerings. i might be able to find someone with a variety so i can try several brands before committing - that would be ideal!

I haven't shopped there for a while, but just finding the link for you I saw a listing for Peanutbutter and Ellie itty bitty prefolds. Tthese are tough to come by and they are sooooo beautiful and soft.
We brought Kate home in one of those and I've kept a couple to remind myself of how teeny they once were. <3
