I've been shopping for a new dining room light fixture. What I have now is a big and heavy oil-rubbed bronze fixture, and I want to switch to something less bulky and dark.
My dining set is mission style ... this. I have a trestle table and a china cabinet, and they don't make those pieces anymore, but the style and color are the same as this. It's not overly formal. The dining room is open to the living room, and both rooms have a casual feel. Nothing too fussy.
I like some more modern lighting, but I'm not sure if these would look right with my furniture. Here are some options I like:
We have similar taste in lighting! Others are definitely going to disagree with me, but I think you could go with any of them since they're all pretty transitional.
We considered #1 and #3 for our dining room and went with #1. Both are on the pricey side if that's a concern, but the good news is that Overstock recently started carrying a version of #1 that's under $500. Lowes used to carry a knock off of #3, but it was discontinued =(.
Number 2 would work with Mission style furniture since it's pretty neutral style-wise, but the other two will look very out of place. Give me a little bit of time, and I'll look for some other suggestions.
There are lots of lights that would work with your dining set. Here are some suggestions/ideas--not all links are necessarily suggestions for lights but, rather, suggestions for style/designs.
Additional random comment: The reason I'm not a fan of the first (orb) light for your dining room is because it is semi-Victorian in inspiration. In its most basic form, the A&C movement was a rejection of Victorian design.
Thanks kaylie for getting the photos posted. I'm not sure what happened with my links.
I think the problem is that I don't like any of the light fixtures that supposedly go with my furniture. I don't want anything in black or oil-rubbed bronze that's heavy and dark looking. That's what I have now and I'm over it. The current chandelier is very similar to #3 on munkii's list.
Maybe I'll go for the drum style ... it works pretty well in this example:
