So far so good. I had the fruit punch kind, and it was cold, so I was able to guzzle it down. I'll have my 2nd blood draw in about 10 minutes, and one more an hour after that and then will be done.
Not feeling too bad right now, but we'll see how I'm feeling in an hour. I am praying I pass this dang thing - I really don't want the GD.
so let's chat about this. what do you do? are you still sitting in a patient room or are you just out in the waiting room? is anybody with you? just reading/GBCNing? they just hand you the drink and then disappear for an hour? nobody ever talks about what they DO the whole time lol.
Ha - okay, here's a breakdown of what's happened/happening:
- Check in, they ask what flavor drink I want, take me to a room - Take my first blood draw (pre-drink) - Drink the drink (in 5 minutes or less) - Tell me the times they'll do my other blood draws, then say I can sit in the quiet room or the waiting room which has a TV (I opted for the quiet room so I could plug in my laptop and get on the internet).
Wait around for an hour...
- Take another blood draw (in the room I originally had my blood drawn in)
Go back to quiet room and wait around for another hour...
And this is where I'm at now. They'll do one more blood draw in a bit and then I will go.
Ash, I had the one hour test and it was done at a lab. They gave me the drink (it was cold) and I slurped it down with the straw I brought with me. I played on my iPad for an hour in the waiting room (I think they normally put you in a different room with more comfy chairs, but the air was out and it was hot in there). Then they took my blood.
I just got my results back and they are normal, thank goodness!

The straw is a great idea. I'm already dreading it.

Me too. I'm scared! I don't drink pop or a lot of juice. I hope I'm allowed to eat beforehand?
I think all docs give different advice about that. I was able to eat before the 1hr, but had to fast for the 3hr. Skimming around the bump, it seems like some have to fast before the 1hr and some don't. I wish I knew the logic behind it!

I wonder if I will have to do this. Is it normally done in the second trimester?
I have about a month until my next appointment.
I believe it's usually done at the end of 2nd/beginning of 3rd. I just had to do it early because of having twins. And will have to do it again in roughly 2 months, which I think is the more standard time to do it.

Honestly, I don't think it was as bad as I thought it would be (based on how much everyone complains about it).
The drink wasn't terrible (especially with the straw). I drank it in less than a minute (they said I had 5 minute to finish). Mine was lemon-lime "flavored," which tasted like a flat, more syrupy Sprite.
I didn't have to fast for the one hour, but only ate a yogurt beforehand because I am weird and didn't want anything else interfering with the test results.
I would suggest bringing a snack or planning to get something to eat after because I was nauseated when I left (but that probably had a lot to do with the fact that it was blazing hot in the office the entire time I was there).

I think it's a pretty standard test that everyone gets.
My doc told me to do it at 28 weeks.
The reason I ask is because they don't do it in Lima.
And my next appointment will be interesting with the differences in care for the last 6 months. I don't know if they'll want to make up for the things I didn't have done or if they will just proceed like normal at the first third trimester check up.
I haven't done mine yet, but they have prepared me for it. At my 24 week appointment, they gave me the drink. I got orange. Sometime between now and my next appt at 28 weeks I need to have it done. I can drink the drink whenever I want (no fasting) and then I just need to show up at the lab to have my blood drawn exactly an hour after I finish the drink. No appt needed. I need to build in a little extra time obviously to get checked in at the lab.

I was going to ask if they were making you do it twice. I had my first around 22 weeks, I passed that. I have my next one I believe next week at 28 weeks. I actually had an ultrasound scheduled the same day so I took the drink, had the ultrasound, had a check up then did the blood draw, I think that's the way to do it if you can have everything in the office. I was never sitting around twiddling my thumbs.

That would be awesome to do it that way! Unfortunately my ultrasounds never seem to last under an hour, and the lab is in a different building than my Dr's office. At least it was way less of a big deal than I thought it'd be.

I did the three hour yesterday and survived as well. Though I did have a terrible headache and was really tired in the afternoon. But today I feel great and back to normal, thankfully.
