I mean, obviously everyone has to move out of the crib eventually, but so many people seem like they're in such a rush to transition. Right now the only appeal is that I'm going to get too big to lift DS before long and could just snuggle in bed with him. But other than that I don't see it. Am I missing some particular magic of the big boy bed?
eta: and I know there are certain instances where you have to like climbing out, etc.

We transitioned Claire to a toddler bed (her crib with a side removed and rail put up) at 20 months because she swan dived out of her crib. We then moved her into another room with a twin bed because I was pregnant and we needed the crib for the baby.
I don't really understand questions like this. I guess people move their kids because they want to?
Why is it a weird question? I've not had a kid in a real bed so am asking if there's something I'm missing out on. Kind of one of those you don't know what you're missing if you haven't had it things.

There is zero appeal for me. We waited and will wait as long as possible to transition. Going potty at night would be a common reason I think. H has a bladder of steel so that never came into play for us.
We bedshare, so the situation is a bit different. But, soon I plan on transitioning Sadie out of her "crib" (my bed) and into her big girl bed (the other bed with Holden). She needs to drop her midnight nursing session first, and I want her to be able to reliably get from her room to mine in the middle of the night if need be first.
But, the reason I want to is just because I don't want little baby feet in my junk all night.
We did it at 18 months because Jameson was getting out of his crib regularly. We would've done it by 2 because we didn't want to buy 2 cribs (baby stays with us the first 6 months). Anna will be at least 2 by the time next baby comes, so I'm hoping for an extra year of crib for her. Even if she is happy in there she'll still get the boot as I don't want 2 cribs.
I am in the camp of "contain as long as possible". However my over arching camp is "whatever gets us all the most sleep". For H, keeping him in the crib until right before he turned 3 worked really well...easy transition to bed, never had to deal with him getting up when he wasn't supposed to, etc etc. I am praying we can do the same with E and it is just as easy...but he is a different kid, so we shall see!

I am in the camp also to contain as long as possible. We did not switch Lydia until after three out of her crib. She was fine in it and never tried to break out of it. We will do the same for Lydia.
For some people I think it is a right of passage to move to a toddler bed because there baby is not little anymore. Others for safety, new baby to re-use crib.
I have noticed when Lydia was little the big jump for a lot of people to switch to toddler bed too young and it did bite them in the but, but to each their own. It all depends on the child.
Thanks for clarifying. You have never struck me as the judgy type so the question kind of threw me coming from you. It is the type of question that people have used here on previous occasions so they can judge others who do something differently.
Soooo, to answer your question honestly. We moved Dylan to a toddler bed because we just wanted to. It worked and he had no troubles with it. Thinking back, I cannot recall an actual reason...we just kind of felt like it.
Oh goodness no, not judging at ALL! It's just something that I genuinely wanted to know if it was like amazing and I should do it right away. Because lifting his 35 lb butt is NOT pleasant, but I like containing that crazy 35lb butt lol. I just really didn't know if there were other reasons I should consider since he's not climbing, seems to actually like his crib, and isn't potty training.

Sorry B. I should have known better with you . My heckles were up for some reason.
no biggie! I had no idea that was something that people even judge about!
DS1 stayed in the crib until he was almost 3. Potty-training wasn't an issue, he PT'd at 2 - he never needed to get out of bed, we always got him if he needed to go.
I love the crib. DS2 will stay in it until he's 5, lol.
