My vent for the day. Why does it cost over $1,300 to insure my beater car with over 100K miles for the year for me and H, who both have PERFECT driving records?
My auto insurance is up 5.5% this year, and last year it went up double digits. I went back through my files and I paid $975 the first year I lived in this city (four years ago). That is like a 35% increase over four years.
I'm sure the hurricanes/storms the NE has had over the last few years doesn't help. Also, as someone already mentioned, MA has really crazy insurance regulations. Are you at least getting good coverage with those rates?
Don't you live in MA? It's because of that. MA is known for ridiculous car insurance rates for some reason.
My relatively new car costs like $400/year to insure here.
I live in RI. My car insurance is actually MORE expensive in RI than it was in Massachusetts.
Seriously, Massachusetts has the reputation for being "taxachusetts" but it should really be "tax island." My taxes are significantly more in this state, too. Don't get me started on my fucking car tax.
You know, I shopped around last year and I actually couldn't find a better deal, unless I switched to geico, but then I would lose the multi-line discount on my homeowners insurance so it was a wash.
I have amica and they are able to do my auto, home, umbrella and insurance on my rental property.
How old is the car? Have you dropped collision/comprehensive insurance at this point, or at least set your deductible very, very high?
I know you love trains are you driving less than 12K miles/year? Some insurers will charge you a lower rate if you can show you're not using your car for daily commuting.

You know I still have collision/comprehensive because I don't want to buy a new car. My deductible is $1,000.
I do drive only about 8,000 miles a year and already have the low mileage discount. But I do commute with it daily, even though its only 2 miles each way.
I kind of want to buy a scooter, though, to commute with. Parking is a BITCH at my office (hint, its by your alma mater) and I have to park on the street.

That sucks. We pay $300 a year with 100/300/100, 100/300 uninsured motorist plus uninsured motorist property damage, and roadside assistance with Nationwide. I don't have full coverage since my van isn't worth much.
I moved to VA from CA in march. When I called the insurance company to switch, and they did the recalculation, they were like...oh, not only have you already paid enough for the year in VA, but we actually owe you money back. My jaw dropped.
Do you both have good credit? Credit is part of insurance premium now.
What are your liability limits? Do you have an umbrella? If you don't have an umbrella, get a quote for $1M and for lowering the auto liability limits to the lowest allowed. Umbrellas are much cheaper AND offer broader coverage.
Do you only have the one car? If so you're not getting the benefit of a multi-car discount but not much you can do about that.
Yes we both have excellent credit with my score being over 800. His is like 780.
If you read my updates you will see that I already have everything bundled with one company. I have a $1 million umbrella and the lowest limits for auto/home that they allow with the umbrella.
$300 a year! Oh my! We pay $2k a year with 1,000 deductibles and good limits and that is still super cheap for Florida.
yowsa! We pay around $1000/yr (in florida, in a flood zone) with $1000/ded .. The limits are the middle limits, not the best, not the worst. Our premium did just go up - the lady told me it was a "state wide increase."

You might also contact a reputable local independent agent to shop it around, if you haven't already. It sounds like you might be only reaching out to the 'direct writers'? There are many other carrier options that are only accessible through an independent. Cincinnati Insurance has a great reputation and there's also Travelers, Hanover, etc. www.iiaba.net/agentlocator/findagent.aspx

You mentioned flood zone, are you are talking about auto or homeowner's Who do you have homeowner's with? I've shopped around for auto insurance a few months ago but USAA has been the cheapest but I need to get a quote with Amica because a friend mentioned them being lower. For homeowner's when we bought we only had two options Citizens and our current company (can't even remember the name).

Our auto is Safeco. Oh, and I'm an idiot. I just realized that premiums are every 6mths... omg duh. soo that would make our ins $1672/yr.. gawd I'm dumb. sorry
Our auto insurance went up when we moved to this county, and I've been told by our auto (and I read somewhere, but I can't find it it now) that our premiums are more in this county than our previous county bc of flood zone factor.
For homeowners, our only option is citizens.. ugh.
we pay $1380/yr for h's car - $1k deductible, just liability because it's old. we pay $2160/yr for my car - $1k deductible, full coverage because it's newer and we still have a loan on it.
we both have perfect driving records, have several discounts already... it's just mad expensive to drive a car in british columbia.
