We live in an apartment, and won't have a dedicated nursery for baby. We do have a good amount of space both in our bedroom and in an open living area that includes both a kitchen and den-like space. Also, we may be moving within a year (when baby is about 6 mo).
I'm trying to figure out what we need for nursery stuff, especially sleep furniture. Baby probably sleeps in our bedroom at first, right? After that, H and I were thinking of having a crib in one of the rooms and a pack 'n' play in the other, with the idea that baby can sleep outside our bedroom at night and inside our bedroom during the day when we want to use that space. MIL just mentioned that maybe we don't even need a crib, and that a pack n play would suffice until we move.
Any thoughts, or experience going crib-less? People with small living spaces, what do you plan to do?

We are using a bassinet in our room in the beginning but we did buy a standard-sized crib for later, located in the nursery that was converted from the dining area. We are planning to not put the apartment up for sale until kid is 1.5 though - if you are certain you'll be moving when the baby is 6 months, the PNP idea is not a bad idea at all. But if moving isn't a certainty, I'd buy a crib and go with your initial plan.
The PNP has a style that includes a bassinet on top. You could use that in your bedroom when you room-share with the baby for the first several months. It's portable enough that you could move it around your place as you see fit for naps, nighttime etc. I wouldn't see the PNP as a long-term solution but you could swing it for the first six months.

I will be living in a small NYC apartment so the nursery will be doubling as an office. We registered for a crib and a Rock n Play, but there is no room for a pack 'n play as well. We also considered getting a mini crib, but have been told that they will grow out of it fairly quickly, and I don't want to have to purchase another piece of furniture in a year.
I know some people forgo the crib and just use a PNP.
We're starting out cribless for this kid because both boys will be eventually sharing a 10'x10' bedroom. There's really not enough room in there for two cribs, and they wouldn't overlap much, so I can't justify a whole 'nother crib. Our plan for now is to start out in the PNP bassinet in our room. This worked for A for 2 weeks, then he refused to lie flat, so he moved to the Rock N Play, where he slept for the next 4 months. So 2.0 will move to the RNP and eventually out of our room to the office until he's reasonably sleeping through the night enough to bunk them together. Some time before then we'll start transitioning A to a toddler bed.
