I did a local triathlon this weekend near my hometown that always ends up being a lot of fun. This was the first tri I ever did and this year was my 9th year in a row doing it. My mom, sister, sister’s BF, and I all did the whole race. My other sister and cousin did it on a team with DH since he’s still recovering. My cousin’s wedding was also the same day so it made for an exciting but exhausting day.
It was a cooler day (~60 at the race start and the water temp was 65) so I was really happy to have my wetsuit. My arms were still freezing for the entire swim. I felt really smooth in the water despite the cold water though.
Getting on the bike was COLD. The course is gorgeous – an out and back along Lake Superior with nice rolling hills. There was a headwind coming off the lake that made for a cold ride. Luckily there was a little bit of a tailwind coming back to make things a little easier on us. I could barely feel my feet going into the run.
I finished the bike with a group of 4 girls so I was happy to have some people to work with. This is a smaller tri and some years the women are so spread out I barely see any on the run. My high school cross country coach also started the run as part of a team just behind me. I tried to hang with her but her fresh legs were moving too fast for me. The run is also an out and back and it’s mostly uphill on the way out. I felt really strong climbing the hills. I ended up catching 3 girls on the run and got passed by 1. The cooler weather made for a nice run.
I ended up 10th overall and 5th in my AG. Overall I was really happy. I was about a minute slower than my time last year but the conditions were a little tougher. The field was a lot more competitive this year too so it was exciting to see some new faces in the crowd.
Swim - .5 miles 15:38 T1 – 1:48 Bike – 23 miles 1:11.41 (19.2 mph) T2 – 1:26 Run – 5 miles 38:18 (7:40 min/mile)
Then we still had energy to get dressed up and dance all night, complete with a routine to Dancing Queen.

The cold weather is a double edged sword. It was great for racing. It made for a freezing cold sunset cruise the night before though. I had 4 layers on and was still cold. In August!
