I noticed in a recent thread a lot of people talked about foam rolling. I've heard of it but don't get it - why is it so great? Is it really that much better than regular stretching? Should I be doing it? Will it change my life?
I realize I could Google this, but I'd rather hear personal experiences. Thanks!
It hurts so good is the best way I can describe the feeling of foam rolling. My calves are always really sore after long runs and when I foam roll, it seriously lessens the tightness. And my dogs love it because I'm on the floor with them.
It's way better than stretching. I think it might change your life. I crave the pain. Seriously though it's such an inexpensive thing that can make a huge difference, al over your body.

I am pretty sure my dog will assume that any kind of roller is a toy and that I am trying to play with her.
I am intrigued. I think it's one of those things where I don't know what I'm missing, and until I try it I can't quite wrap my mind around a glorified pool noodle having an effect on my muscles.
It's a hard pool noodle of amazingness. I use a PVC pipe at the gym on my calves because they get so tight. It's also good for my IT band that gets super tight since my ACL surgery. I foam roll my back too. Love my foam roller!
We do a ton of foam rolling at xfit, that and working with lacrosse balls to meet the same goals...essentially it works to break down the layer of scar tissue that builds up between the muscle and skin, which comes from working the muscle. It is extremely painful at the time but will lead to greater overall mobility over time. It is particularly good for people with tight ITbands and hip flexors.
I use it for cracking my back. it cracks from lower all the way to upper. I haven't really figured out the rolling out muscle part yet. I did find out through xfit that those little hard balls are amazing on upper back knots. I need a roller and those!

Ohhh man I could use some back-cracking, calf-massaging help. This week has been gear week. Ordered nuun and a HRM already in the last couple of days. Should I splurge on a foam roller too? All signs point to yes!
I foam roll after every. single. run:) I love it - I get really tight from running and foam rolling allows me to get more miles in and I feel better. I bought my foam roller off of Amazon and my LRS offers foam rolling clinics. I also get on Pinterest and pin foam rolling techniques.

Can you post which roller you got from Amazon?
foam roller - I got the larger one - they are easier to use. I fall off the smaller ones:)
