One of my jobs is where I go for an hour in the mornings and care for an elderly lady. Lately I've taken her to her voice lessons, but now the times have changed.
I am supposed to take her to her lesson on Saturday, because her daughter is out of town. I normally work from 9:30-10:30 AM, but I was told the lesson was from about 11-noon. Not really a problem, but I have a friend from out of town here this coming weekend and we have plans. I can put them off for a couple of hours, so it would work.
The voice teacher told me last Saturday that she will probably need the lesson to be a 1. That means it'd be 2 before I'd be home and ready to roll out. I can't start our plans and then stop and come back...it just wouldn't work.
If they can't do her lesson at her normal time (11), is it ok for me to say I can't take her? I don't want her to miss a lesson, but that really fouls up my plans for the day pretty bad. If I didn't have a friend visiting, it'd be no big deal.
I would probably talk to the teacher and say that you have a conflict with the "new" time. And see if she can keep it at 11, since that is already later than it is supposed to be. If she can't keep it the regular time, I think it would be acceptable to say that you can't make it.
Do you have a contract that states the time that you work, or is it just an as needed basis?
I did speak with the teacher and she is going to try to get her an earlier appointment.
There's no contract with this job. The agreement is M-Sat. 9:30-1:30 AM. She was doing voice lessons on Thursday evenings, which I took her to a few times. The summer voice lessons are on Saturdays, which is fine, but this weekend I have a friend coming and an afternoon appointment seriously messes things up.
